TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for the countercurrent contacting of solid particles with a fluid is disclosed, where the contacting is effected within a multistage tower, each stage having a weir means regulating the flow of particles within and from each chamber so that all particles receive approximately the same exposure to the contacting fluid.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the countercurrent contacting of solid particles with a fluid is disclosed. The contacting is effected within a multistage tower, each stage having a weir means regulating the flow of particles within and from each chamber so that all particles receive approximately the same exposure to the contacting fluid. The disclosed design is readily scaled up to increase capacity without requiring proportional increases in the vertical dimension which are costly and might result in damage to the particles. The method and apparatus are especially adapted for washing salt from alumina microspheres.

TL;DR: In this paper, a countercurrent continuous catalytic reactor system for treating a liquid phase, such as oil, with a gaseous reactant is described. But the level detector apparatus is disposed in a froth zone above the catalyst bed for detecting level of a mixed gas-liquid froth.
Abstract: A countercurrent continuous catalytic reactor system for treating a liquid phase, such as oil, with a gaseous reactant. An enclosed reactor shell contains a fixed porous bed of solid catalyst, upper liquid inlet device for introducing a stream of liquid substantially above the catalyst bed for downward gravity flow through the bed, and lower liquid outlet device for withdrawing treated liquid from the reactor shell. A gaseous reactant is dispersed through the liquid phase in intimate contact with the solid catalyst, and withdrawn above the catalyst bed. Level detector apparatus is disposed in a froth zone above the catalyst bed for detecting level of a mixed gas-liquid froth. Fluid handling control apparatus responsive to a level signal controls fluid stream flow for regulating froth level above the catalyst bed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of diffusion and reaction parameters on uphill transport and the optimum length of the mass separator were investigated for fully developed, one-dimensional, laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid in either a parallel plate or hollow fiber mass separators, with equilibrium chemical reactions inside the membrane, the countertransport rate in the separator was analyzed.

TL;DR: In this paper, experimental data are presented for two different methods of operating vertical moving fluidized systems of glass spheres and water: free countercurrent fluidization and bottom-restrained nonfed, or batch, fluidization.
Abstract: Experimental data are presented for two different methods of operating vertical moving fluidized systems of glass spheres and water: free countercurrent fluidization and bottom-restrained nonfed, or batch, fluidization. Data for a lead-shot-and-water system are also reported. A comparison is made of these data with a generalized theoretical analysis of ideal fluidized systems. The validity of a single characteristic holdup vs. slip-velocity relationship is illustrated, and consideration is also given to the prediction of flooding in the free countercurrent systems.

TL;DR: In this article, countercurrent heat exchange between gas and a solid granular material arranged in an improved panel bed is described, and the methods afford outstandingly low pressure drop in the gas, and especially short residence times of gas in the panel bed during its heating or cooling.
Abstract: Methods are provided for countercurrent heat exchange between gas and a solid granular material arranged in an improved panel bed. The methods afford outstandingly low pressure drop in the gas, and especially short residence times of gas in the panel bed during its heating or cooling. The methods are useful at extreme temperatures, such as temperatures beyond 2000°F. They are useful for heating air for process use against products of combustion of a fuel; for heating air for combustion of low-grade fuels and wastes of low heating value against their products of combustion; for heating a feed gas to a process against a gaseous or vapor effluent therefrom; and for removing particulate matter from the gas being heated or cooled, as, for instance, when the gas is an effluent from a fluidized bed of particulate solids. The methods are useful for storing heat or cold in a granular material where a hot or cold gas is available at a time inconvenient for utilizing the heat or cold in the gas; the methods are then advantageously employed to liberate the stored heat or cold to a gas when it is needed.
