TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the determination of liquid hold-up in gas/liquid two-phase countercurrent columns filled with random or structured packings, with only slight deviations.
Abstract: We present the determination of liquid hold-up in gas/liquid two-phase countercurrent columns filled with random or structured packings. The equations resulting from the established physical relationships are verified against the values for liquid hold-up determined experimentally on 56 different column packings and 16 gas/liquid systems. The experimental and calculated results agree well, with only slight deviations. This also applies to the range between the loading and flooding points for two-phase countercurrent flow

TL;DR: The foam separation process uses differences in surface activity to separate components of a solution to give countercurrent differential separations with stripping, enrichment, or scrubbing similar to solvent extraction as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The foam separation process uses differences in surface activity to separate components of a solution. Stable foams can flow upward countercurrent to liquid to give countercurrent differential separations with stripping, enrichment, or scrubbing similar to solvent extraction. Six- and 24-in. I.D. foam columns were operated with sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate solutions to measure height of transfer unit (HTU) values and foam densities and to develop satisfactory gas spargers, liquid feed distributors, foam drainage conditions, and foam condensation equipment. The HTU values for stripping of Sr-89 were about 1 cm. for the best conditions of uniform foams, liquid flows of 100 gal./sq.ft.hr. or less, and uniform liquid feed distribution with low inlet velocities. Variations of countercurrent column lengths within 10 to 28 cm. caused little variation in HTU values. The foams were condensed, with four types of pneumatic or mechanical foam breakers used. A pilot plant was designed for decontamination of a low level radioactive waste.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new flooding correlation is presented, based on the classic flooding equation where the effects of gravity, interphase momentum exchange, and instability of the gas/liquid interface are considered.

TL;DR: In this article, a multilayer coiled column with two inlet and two outlet lines for solvent phases and a sample feed line was proposed for the separation of natural products and synthetic intermediates.
Abstract: A modern method of performing conventional countercurrent distribution called Dual Countercurrent Chromatography is described. The system consists of a multilayer coiled column integrated with two inlet and two outlet lines for solvent phases and a sample feed line. Subjecting the system to a particular combination of centrifugal and planetary motions produces a unique hydrodynamic effect which allows two immiscible liquids to flow countercurrently through the coiled column. The sample solution is fed at the middle portion of the column and eluted simultaneously through the column in the opposite direction by two liquids. This distinct feature of maintaining a constant fresh two phases within the coiled column permits a rich domain of application, such as continuous sample process and continuous extraction. The present paper describes the application of this dual countercurrent system to the separation of natural products and synthetic intermediates. Preliminary results indicate that this new met...
