Abstract: A nonlinear device for ultrafast processing is proposed. This device is based on the nonlinear propagation in a waveguide loop formed by connecting the output ports of a conventional coupler. The device is shown to have potentially useful characteristics for unequal coupling ratios and has the ability to operate on entire pulses when soliton effects are included.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider a leader-following consensus problem of a group of autonomous agents with time-varying coupling delays. Two different cases of coupling topologies are investigated. At first, a necessary and sufficient condition is proved in the case when the interconnection topology is fixed and directed. Then a sufficient condition is proposed in the case when the coupling topology is switched and balanced. Numerical examples are also given to illustrate our results.

Abstract: A variational technique is developed to investigate the low-lying energy levels of a conduction electron in a polar crystal. Because of the strong interaction between the electron and the longitudinal optical mode of the lattice vibrations, perturbation-theoretic methods are inapplicable. Our variational technique, which is closely related to the "intermediate coupling" method introduced by Tomonaga, is equivalent to a simple canonical transformation. The use of this transformation enables us to obtain the wave functions and energy levels quite simply. Because the recoil of the electron introduces a correlation between the emission of successive virtual phonons by the electron, our approximation, in which this correlation is neglected, breaks down for very strong electron-phonon coupling. The validity of our approximation is investigated and corrections are found to be small for coupling strengths occurring in typical polar crystals.

Abstract: A new type of cross-coupled planar microwave filter using coupled microstrip square open-loop resonators is proposed. A method for the rigorous calculation of the coupling coefficients of three basic coupling structures encountered in this type of filter is developed. Simple empirical models are derived for estimation of the coupling coefficients. Experiments are performed to verify the theory. A four-pole elliptic function filter of this type is designed and fabricated. Both the theoretical and experimental performance is presented.
