TL;DR: In this article, the collected wisdom of international leaders in the theory and practice of crowdsourcing in cultural heritage is discussed, along with case studies of ground-breaking projects from leading cultural heritage and academic institutions.
Abstract: Crowdsourcing, or asking the general public to help contribute to shared goals, is increasingly popular in memory institutions as a tool for digitising or computing vast amounts of data. This book brings together for the first time the collected wisdom of international leaders in the theory and practice of crowdsourcing in cultural heritage. It features eight accessible case studies of ground-breaking projects from leading cultural heritage and academic institutions, and four thought-provoking essays that reflect on the wider implications of this engagement for participants and on the institutions themselves. Crowdsourcing in cultural heritage is more than a framework for creating content: as a form of mutually beneficial engagement with the collections and research of museums, libraries, archives and academia, it benefits both audiences and institutions. However, successful crowdsourcing projects reflect a commitment to developing effective interface and technical designs. This book will help practitioners who wish to create their own crowdsourcing projects understand how other institutions devised the right combination of source material and the tasks for their 'crowd'. The authors provide theoretically informed, actionable insights on crowdsourcing in cultural heritage, outlining the context in which their projects were created, the challenges and opportunities that informed decisions during implementation, and reflecting on the results. This book will be essential reading for information and cultural management professionals, students and researchers in universities, corporate, public or academic libraries, museums and archives.

TL;DR: In this article, a stated value experiment is reported that assesses values held for protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage sites in central Queensland, and three population groups were sampled, being an indigenous population, and regional centre and capital city populations.
Abstract: In this paper, a stated value experiment is reported that assesses values held for protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage sites in central Queensland. Choice Modelling, a stated preference non-market valuation technique, was used to estimate non-use values for protecting cultural heritage sites in the context of further water resource allocation and irrigation development. Three population groups were sampled, being an indigenous population, and regional centre and capital city populations. Results show that there are significant differences in values between indigenous and general population groups. The general population groups had negative values for high levels of cultural heritage site protection, but did have positive values for small increases in protection above current levels.

TL;DR: CVRO as discussed by the authors is a professional association devoted to the computer modeling of cultural heritage sites, which is a play on the Latin word curo ("I care for") and English "curate".
Abstract: The authors first sketch the development of cultural virtual reality (CVR) within the overall context of the development of computing since the 1940s. After establishing the nature and ubiquity of virtual reality systems, especially in the 1990s, and predicting their further spread in the coming decade, they argue that the time is ripe for the creation of a new professional association devoted to the computer modeling of cultural heritage sites. The proposed association will be called CVRO (or, "Cultural Virtual Reality Organization”) – a play on the Latin word curo ("I care for”; cfr. English "curate”). It will be open to professors, students, and professionals actively engaged in the theory and practice of cultural virtual reality – the content developers of CVR. The goals of CVRO will include: defining and defending the interests of its members; holding an annual meeting for the exchange of information; hosting a Web site; and developing aesthetic, scientific, and technical standards for cultural virtual reality models. Readers wishing to join CVRO are asked to contact one of the co-authors.

TL;DR: A survey of three Queensland rural heritage museums designed to discover visitors' reactions to the communication channels used to alert them to the existence of the museums and to identify the visitors' preferred methods of advertising was conducted by as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Heritage tourism is growing rapidly in popularity as people seek to rediscover the past. One obvious group of attractions heritage tourists seek out are museums. Many museums are outside the government sector, and for these museums, tourism offers considerable scope to generate revenue to fund new displays and pay recurrent costs. This study reports on a survey of three Queensland rural heritage museums designed to discover visitors’ reactions to the communication channels used to alert them to the existence of the museums and to identify the visitors’ preferred methods of advertising. The outcome of the survey identifies the need for museum custodians to reconsider the promotional strategies employed to advertise rural museums to the drive tourist market and suggests a simple checklist of low-cost yet effective advertising methods that can be used by rural museums.
