TL;DR: A certain level of stress may be required to stimulate individuals to make creative responses to the new challenges they confront, but stresses can be so extreme and oppressive as to push people into blind defensive reactions or to lead them to seek to withdraw from the stressful situation.
Abstract: Cultural change is a necessary concomitant of economic progress, and yet the process subjects the inhabitants of the changing community to psychological stress. One should not assume that such stresses are always "bad things," which could and should be eliminated by more effective social and economic planning. A certain level of stress may be required to stimulate individuals to make creative responses to the new challenges they confront. On the other hand, stresses can be so extreme and oppressive as to push people into blind defensive reactions or to lead them to seek to withdraw from the stressful situation.
