Abstract: The term "knowledge economy" is now widely used to signify the growth of a new industrial era, encompassing the capture and exploitation of global knowledge, to create new, or improved, processes or products which, in turn, give rise to wealth creation. But how does knowledge arise and how is it part of the enabling process that leads to new processes or products? How are raw data turned into wealth creation? And what is the role of engineering in this process? This paper describes a Capability Framework, which shows how the collective operational competence of any organisation is driven by the procedures regulating its activity, the information availability and the human skills applied. It further shows how the learning and experience that support the decision making are fundamental in determining the quality and effectiveness of the process through which the activity is directed. The Capability Framework also shows the linkages with creativity and innovation which, applied through the transformation mechanism provided by engineering, can harness collective capability and with the Business Strategy establish wealth creation through technology introduction and new product development. This approach identifies the basis for the controlled management of business performance improvement by channelling effort through the three fundamental segments (staff development, information systems and operating processes) to provide a platform for the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives in a self-sustaining environment. Additionally, it highlights the importance of knowledge capture as a means of improving the decision making process, particularly in recognition of the increasing proliferation of basic technology that is the unavoidable by-product of specialisation. The importance of culture change, as the essential catalyst for sustainable improvement, is presented in the context of repositioning the field of engineering to reignite creativity and innovation as the drivers of wealth creation.

Abstract: musical culture of immigrant populations, studying their relationship to the music of countries of origin or home countries, and of host countries, assessing degrees and kinds of change and stability resulting from their immigrant and, normally, also their minority status. A considerable body of knowledge has been built up about the folklore and folk music of non-English speaking immigrant groups in the United States and Canada, producing hypotheses of typical musical behavior that reinforce theories about stability as related to marginal survival of archaic culture traits, about the development of syncretistic styles, and about gradual modernization, Westernization, and Anglicization (linguistic and cultural) of older European musical traditions.' Research along these lines is, of course, related, and has substantially contributed to, the rather large but so far not highly systematized body of knowledge regarding the role of music in culture change and about the processes of musical change itself.2 A number of other venues could provide comparative and possibly corroborative data, for while North America is one of the large areas comprised of a well-defined majority population with many immigrant minorities, other, perhaps smaller and more concentrated areas, have played similar roles in the social history of the world in recent decades. Israel is widely cited among these.3

Abstract: Purpose This interview demonstrates how CEOs can focus on CSR to engage the workforce and change the culture and performance of an organization. Design/methodology/approach This article reports on an interview with Dr David Cooke, Managing Director of Konica Minolta Australia. Findings By introducing CSR to the firm, and in particular pursuing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #8 against human trafficking, the MD not only changed the management style and culture in the organization, but also enhanced commercial results. Performance improved across many measures: revenue, profit, market share in a declining marketplace, highest number of units placed into the Australian market, increasing prestige associated with the company’s brand, and becoming an employer of choice. Research limitations/implications The findings are consistent with the literature on corporate sustainable investment, but further studies are needed to fully understand the processes involved in changing culture and improving performance via CSR. Practical implications This interview clearly shows the steps that the new CEO took in radically changing the culture of his organization by adopting CSR extensively. Social implications The power of business is vital to pursuing societal goals, and the case of Konica Minolta Australia demonstrates that doing so also benefits the company. Originality/value This study clearly explains how a corporate culture was changed and performance enhanced through a strategy based on investment in social issues.
