TL;DR: A novel state replication approach that first identifies stimuli based on the system's specification and then replicates them in a virtual environment is proposed and shown to be feasible.
Abstract: Digital twins play a key role in realizing the vision of a smart factory. While this concept is often associated with maintenance, optimization, and simulation, digital twins can also be leveraged to enhance the security and safety of cyber-physical systems (CPSs). In particular, digital twins can run in parallel to a CPS, allowing to perform a security and safety analysis during operation without the risk of disrupting live systems. However, replicating states of physical devices within a CPS in functionally equivalent virtual replicas, so that they precisely mirror the internal behavior of their counterparts, is an open research topic. In this paper, we propose a novel state replication approach that first identifies stimuli based on the system's specification and then replicates them in a virtual environment. We believe that replicating states of CPSs is a prerequisite for a multitude of security and safety enhancing features that can be implemented on the basis of digital twins. To demonstrate the feasibility of the specification-based state replication approach, we provide a prototypical implementation and evaluate it in an experimental CPS test bed. The results of this paper show that attacks against CPSs can be successfully detected by leveraging the proposed state replication approach.

TL;DR: An application map is introduced which includes the spheres smart factory, industrial smart data, industrialsmart services, smart products, product-related smart data and product- related smart services for utilizing cyber-physical architectures adjusted to their unique business situation.
Abstract: The potential transformation cyber-physical systems can bring to a broad variety of domains is widely discussed in academia and industry. Despite the expected benefits in the industrial domain of further automatization of production processes and the possibility to produce “batch size one” at large-scale production costs, the majority of organizations hesitate in the implementation of cyber-physical systems. This can be attributed to uncertainty decision makers feel, about how to choose right applications of cyber-physical systems and if chosen how to implement these applications to the unique and specific needs of their organization. To address this problem this chapter introduces an application map which includes the spheres smart factory, industrial smart data, industrial smart services, smart products, product-related smart data and product-related smart services. Based on this model, the decision makers are provided a scheme of application fields for utilizing cyber-physical architectures adjusted to their unique business situation.

TL;DR: The causes and effects of complexity, both in general and specific to CPS, are described, the evolution of complexity is considered, and limitations of current methodologies and organizations for dealing with future CPS are identified.
Abstract: Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) integrate computation, networking and physical processes to produce products that are autonomous, intelligent, connected and collaborative. Resulting Cyber-Physical Systems of Systems (CPSoS) have unprecedented capabilities but also unprecedented corresponding technological complexity. This paper aims to improve understanding, awareness and methods to deal with the increasing complexity by calling for the establishment of new foundations, knowledge and methodologies. We describe causes and effects of complexity, both in general and specific to CPS, consider the evolution of complexity, and identify limitations of current methodologies and organizations for dealing with future CPS. The lack of a systematic treatment of uncertain complex environments and “composability”, i.e., to integrate components of a CPS without negative side effects, represent overarching limitations of existing methodologies. Dealing with future CPSoS requires: (i) increased awareness of complexity, its impact and best practices for how to deal with it, (ii) research to establish new knowledge, methods and tools for CPS engineering, and (iii) research into organizational approaches and processes to adopt new methodologies and permit efficient collaboration within and across large teams of humans supported by increasingly automated computer aided engineering systems.
