Abstract: This paper deals with an original method suitable for estimating the noise introduced by optical imaging systems, such as CCD cameras, multispectral scanners and imaging spectrometers. The power of the signal-dependent photonic noise is decoupled from that of the signal-independent noise generated by the electronic circuitry. The method relies on the multivariate regression of local sample mean and variance. Statistically homogeneous pixels produce scatter-points that are clustered along a straight line, whose slope and intercept measure the signal-dependent and signal-independent components of the noise power, respectively. Experimental results carried out on a simulated noisy image and on true data from a modern generation airborne imaging spectrometer highlight the accuracy of the proposed method and its robustness to textures that may lead to a gross over-estimation of the noise, for high SNR.

Abstract: The invention relates to a novel process and system for removing noise from an image by first noise modeling an image signal source to generate noise masks and LUT values characteristic of noise at different frequency levels for each channel, and then applying the stored noise masks and LUT values to an image signal for noise removal. The image is first captured as an electronic image signal by the image signal source, then represented by a pyramid structure whereby each successive level of the pyramid is constructed from DC values of the previous level, and each level of the pyramid corresponds to a different frequency band of the image signal. A Wiener variant filter using DCT transforms is used to filter DCT coefficients at each level. The image is restored with reduced noise by replacing DC values with next level IDCT coefficients then performing an IDCT on the results.

Abstract: Film-grain noise describes the intrinsic noise produced by a photographic emulsion during the process of image recording and reproduction. In this paper we consider the restoration of images degraded by film-grain noise. First a detailed model for the over-all photographic imaging system is presented. The model includes linear blurring effects and the signal-dependent effect of film-grain noise. The accuracy of this model is tested by simulating images according to it and comparing the results to images of similar targets that were actually recorded on film. The restoration of images degraded by film-grain noise is then considered in the context of estimation theory. A discrete Wiener filer is developed which explicitly allows for the signal dependence of the noise. The filter adaptively alters its characteristics based on the nonstationary first order statistics of an image and is shown to have advantages over the conventional Wiener filter. Experimental results for modeling and the adaptive estimation filter are presented.

Abstract: In digital subtraction angiography a low X-ray energy temporal subtraction image is displayed on a video monitor. Regions in the temporal image frame that contain motion artifacts are outlined by using a cursor. The coordinates of the pixels in the defined outlined region are stored in a processor memory. The data for a related hybrid subtraction image are developed and stored. The processor then effects substitution of the hybrid subtraction image pixels, that fall within the same defined region, into the temporal subtraction image. The combined image data are transferred to a display controller memory which controls display of the combined image on a monitor. A method and means are provided for automatically determining the optimum value of the weighting coefficient applied to the high energy temporal subtraction image that results in the most complete cancellation of everything in the two images except the contrast medium filled blood vessel when the high and low energy temporal images are subtracted. A method and means are provided for altering the gain and offset of the hybrid image data in such manner as to match the hybrid image contrast and brightness with that of the temporal subtraction image.
