TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of the recent progress and projected future trends in flat dot matrix display technology as it is applied to vehicle instrumentation and discuss the design methodology, electrooptical properties, and function of three types of FLDM display modules which have an intermediate number of picture elements.
Abstract: Due to the recent increase in safety and operational information supplied to vehicle operators, an important need has arisen: the development of an effective display unit which uses a minimal amount of dashboard space. A flat dot matrix lcd module is one possible satisfactory solution, but it is somewhat limited in terms of response time and viewing angle. This paper presents a review of the recent progress and projected future trends in lcd technology as it is applied to vehicle instrumentation. In addition, the paper discusses the design methodology, electrooptical properties, and function of three types of flat dot matrix display modules which have an intermediate number of picture elements (a).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a dashboard for the cockpit interior of a motor vehicle with a wideband console between steering wheel hub and windscreen for driving and dialogue mode, where the driver's attention is not distracted from maintaining the direction and lane of the vehicle and the boundary lines of the driver angle of view.
Abstract: The invention relates to a dashboard, especially for the cockpit interior in a motor vehicle, both for small motor vehicles in the form of passenger cars and for large vehicles in the form of trucks and long vehicles, in combination with an analogue instrument panel and in combination with a display wideband console between steering wheel hub and windscreen of the motor vehicle for driving and dialogue mode. At the same time, the reading of analogue instruments performing a road safety function is not to be rendered more difficult by the additional arrangement of dialogue displays, the driver's attention not distracted from maintaining the direction and lane of the vehicle and the boundary lines of the driver's angle of view and side markers not constricted by the drive and dialogue console, even taking the individually adjustable mirrors into account, since a much greater number of technically related and logically comprehensible process data sequences are to be reliably and readably displayed for the human eye whilst driving. In contrast to the instrument layout in the cockpit of an aircraft, the design of meters, instruments and displays in the cockpit of a motor vehicle has a great influence on driving and the dialogue with the driver, since the maintenance of lane by the vehicle [...] on a multidimensional... TL;DR: In this paper, an infrared light emission is backscattered by the fog and then analyzed, which allows the visibility to be deduced as a function of individual characteristics of the car.
Abstract: An infrared light emission is backscattered by the fog. The backscattered part is picked up and then analysed, which allows the visibility to be deduced. As a function of the individual characteristics of the car, this allows a recommended speed to be calculated as a function of the visibility. This recommended speed is compared with the actual speed of the vehicle, which makes it possible to indicate to the driver the risk which he is taking relative to the visibility allowed by the fog. The system comprises: - an emission optical system - a receiving optical system - processing electronics - a system for signalling to the driver using warning lights. The tests will be made with the apparatus mounted behind the windscreen on the dashboard.

TL;DR: In this paper, the steering wheel is pushed downward to make the driver's head hit only the less rigid part of a steering wheel by displacing the wheel downward at the time of collision.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To make a driver's head hit only the less rigid part of a steering wheel by displacing the wheel downward at the time of collision. CONSTITUTION:When a dashboard lower panel 3 has been pressed by an engine 'E' at the time of collision, a lower support bracket 11 retreats. Concurrently therewith, a connecting rod 12 is moved about the upper end thereof and said bracket 11 is guided and shifted above the axial line of a steering shaft 1. Therefore, the steering shaft 1 is caused to move about the intermediate part thereof supported by an upper support bracket 8, thereby displacing a steering wheel 2 downward.

TL;DR: In this paper, a design of the dashboard body has been proposed, where the material sections produced when punching out the openings no longer constitute waste, as hitherto, but can be further utilised to good effect as further cockpit elements, for example as console or as glove compartment cover.
Abstract: A cockpit for vehicles, especially motor vehicles, has a dashboard body, initially manufactured without recesses, into which openings, for example for display instrument and heating, radio and groups of switches and for the glove compartment can then be punched. In addition, further cockpit elements are provided, which are composed of the same material as the dashboard body. Areas of the dashboard body, which are intended for punching out the openings are so formed that these entire areas or parts suitably formed from them can be used as further cockpit elements after punching out. Such a design of the dashboard body has the advantage that the material sections produced when punching out the openings no longer constitute waste, as hitherto, but can be further utilised to good effect as further cockpit elements, for example as console or as glove compartment cover.

TL;DR: In this paper, a dashboard for vehicles, especially motor vehicles, is composed of an upper part (dashboard support member) and a lower part (air duct), which are each composed of a material differing from the material of the other part and are joined to one another.
Abstract: A dashboard for vehicles, especially motor vehicles, is composed of an upper part (dashboard support member) and a lower part (air duct), which are each composed of a material differing from the material of the other part and are joined to one another, for example bonded. In this case the material of the lower part (air duct) has a greater coefficient of thermal expansion than the material of the upper part (dashboard support member). In order to compensate for the correspondingly differing thermal expansion characteristics of the lower part and the upper part under the relatively large temperature differences, to which the dashboard may be subjected, according to the season, weather and operating conditions, the lower part (air duct) has at least one, preferably more, expansion joints, which like a tent are bridged by film hinges.

TL;DR: In this article, a bolt passing through a hole in the panel and engaging, via a clip-type nut, with the dashboard has been described, where the bolt has an external spring face, against which a shoulder on the bolt bears.
Abstract: The device has a bolt (22) passing through a hole in the panel (2) and engaging, via a clip-type nut (7), with the dashboard (1). Since such panels are usually of plastics while the dashboard is of metal, they are liable to work loose or crack in time. The nut has an external spring face, against which a shoulder (24) on the bolt bears. This distorts it so as to bear against the panel.
