TL;DR: In this article, a driver travelling with a second person can switch some of the control (5) and display functions (3,4) located at the dashboard to the side of the front passenger.
Abstract: A driver travelling with a second person can switch some of the control (5) and display functions (3,4) located at the dashboard to the side of the front passenger. A navigation system (15) with a display screen, an air conditioning unit (16), a telephone (18) or the entertainment system (17) can be provided with control elements (5) and/or touch-screen facilities to be used optionally by the driver on his/her side of the dashboard or by the passenger.

TL;DR: An innovative technique is applied to manufacture a plastic automotive component to reduce its weight and costs, and guarantee its design was safe, to evaluate its passive safety performance in the event of an automobile accident.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to apply an innovative technique to manufacture a plastic automotive component to reduce its weight and costs, and guarantee its design was safe. A frontal impact sled test was simulated, and the damages to the occupant’s legs were assessed, with specific reference to the dashboard’s glove box. The replacement of the current glove box with a new component fabricated using additive manufacturing was analyzed to evaluate its passive safety performance in the event of an automobile accident. The materials analyzed were polyamide and polypropylene, both reinforced with 5% basalt. The stiffness of the system was previously characterized by reproducing a subsystem test. Subsequently, the same rating test performed by the Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) was reproduced numerically, and the main biomechanical parameters required by the Euro NCAP were estimated for both the current and the additive production of the component.

TL;DR: In this article , a cloud-based big data framework for emergency response and management in smart cities is presented. But the authors focus on the detection and representation of useful features related to the disaster.
Abstract: This chapter highlights the key challenges of our ongoing project in developing an information technology solution for emergency response and management in smart cities. We aim to develop a cloud-based big data framework that will enable us to utilize heterogeneous data sources and sophisticated machine learning techniques to gather, process, and integrate information intelligently to support emergency response to any disaster or crisis rapidly. After identifying the right data sources, we turn our attentions into investigating suitable techniques that can be utilized in disaster-event detection as well as extraction and representation of useful features related to the disaster. We also outline our approach in analysis and integration of disaster-related knowledge with the help of a disaster ontology. Our ultimate goal is to display and disseminate actionable information to the decision-makers in the format most appropriate for carrying out emergency response and coordination efficiently. We developed a dashboard-like interface to facilitate such goal. For any disaster or emergency, the heterogeneous nature (texts, image, audio, and videos) and sheer volume of data instantly available on the social media platforms necessitate fast and automated processing (including integration and fusion of information originating from disparate sources). This chapter highlights our ongoing research in addressing such challenges in an automated fashion using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques suitable for processing multimodal social-media data. Our research contributions will eventually facilitate building a comprehensive disaster management framework and system that may streamline emergency response operations in the smart cities.

TL;DR: A retracting rip aid for car wheels has a flat profile band on a pivot mounting alongside the wheel to swing into position around the wheel for improved grip as discussed by the authors, which can be shaped as a band around the tyre or as a set of grip pads whirled under the tyre by a servo driven mounting alongside.
Abstract: A retracting rip aid for car wheels has a flat profile band on a pivot mounting alongside the wheel to swing into position around the wheel to improved grip. The band has grip surfaces on both sides and is retracted so as not to damage clear roads. The aid is operated from the dashboard controls. It can be shaped as a band around the tyre or as a set of grip pads whirled under the tyre by a servo driven mounting alongside the tyre.
