TL;DR: In this paper, a control panel and/or dashboard display system which allows a user to selectively configure at least one of position and characteristic, items displayed on the control panel or dashboard display is presented.
Abstract: A control panel and/or dashboard display system which allows a user to selectively configure at least one of position and characteristic, items displayed on the control panel and/or dashboard display system. A system is provided and includes an interactive database of menu items that is accessible by the user for selecting the items to be displayed on the control panel and/or dashboard display system using touch screen technology or actuatable buttons to select the desired displayed items and the appearance of the displayed items. The user has the ability to save the customized configurations to memory and to lock out change. Further provides for applications wherein said control/panel and/or dashboard display systems are used in multiple locations.

TL;DR: In this article, a self-contained sleepiness monitor for steering wheel or dashboard mounting is used for individual driver/operator interrogation and response, combined with various objective sensory inputs, and translates these inputs into weighting factors to adjust a biological activity circadian rhythm reference model, in turn to provide an audio-visual sleepiness warning indication.
Abstract: A vehicle driver or machine operator sleepiness monitor (10), configured as a self-contained module (11), for steering wheel or dashboard mounting, provides for individual driver/operator interrogation and response, combined with various objective sensory inputs (13, 15, 27, 29) on vehicle condition and driver control action, and translates these inputs into weighting factors to adjust a biological activity circadian rhythm reference model, in turn to provide an audio-visual sleepiness warning indication (18).

TL;DR: A novel laser-based wide-area heads-up windshield display which is capable of actively interfacing with a human as part of a driver assistance system is introduced and certain alerts demonstrate the utility and promise of the DAD system.
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a novel laser-based wide-area heads-up windshield display which is capable of actively interfacing with a human as part of a driver assistance system. The dynamic active display (DAD) is a unique prototype interface that presents safety-critical visual icons to the driver in a manner that minimizes the deviation of his or her gaze direction without adding to unnecessary visual clutter. As part of an automotive safety system, the DAD presents alerts in the field of view of the driver only if necessary, which is based upon the state and pose of the driver, vehicle, and environment. This paper examines the effectiveness of DAD through a comprehensive comparative experimental evaluation of a speed compliance driver assistance system, which is implemented on a vehicular test bed. Three different types of display protocols for assisting a driver to comply with speed limits are tested on actual roadways, and these are compared with a conventional dashboard display. Given the inclination, drivers who are given an overspeed warning alert reduced the time required to slow down to the speed limit by 38% (p < 0.01) as compared with the drivers not given the alert. Additionally, certain alerts decreased distraction levels by reducing the time spent looking away from the road by 63% (p < 0.01). Ultimately, these alerts demonstrate the utility and promise of the DAD system.

TL;DR: A display system adapted to a dashboard in a vehicle compartment, the dashboard including an instrument panel and a hood located above the dashboard and below a front windshield of the vehicle compartment is described in this paper.
Abstract: A display system adapted to a dashboard in a vehicle compartment, the dashboard including an instrument panel and a hood located above the instrument panel and below a front windshield of the vehicle compartment, wherein the instrument panel is provided with a first opening directed toward the driver's seat in the compartment, and the hood is provided with a second opening directed toward the internal surface of the front windshield, and wherein the display system comprises an indicator mounted within the dashboard in such a manner than the display surface of the indicator is opposed to the second opening, a mirror plate arranged within the dashboard and movable between a first position in which the mirror plate reflects visual rays representative of information on the indicator toward the first opening and blocks the visual rays toward the second opening and a second position in which the mirror plate permits the visual rays toward the second opening and blocks the visual rays toward the first opening, and an electric drive mechanism for selectively actuating the mirror plate from the first position to the second position and vice versa.
