TL;DR: It is shown that queries formulated on shared views, export schema, and shared “ontologies” can be mediated in the same way using the Context Interchange framework.
Abstract: The Context Interchange strategy presents a novel perspective for mediated data access in which semantic conflicts among heterogeneous systems are not identified a priori, but are detected and reconciled by a context mediator through comparison of contexts axioms corresponding to the systems engaged in data exchange. In this article, we show that queries formulated on shared views, export schema, and shared “ontologies” can be mediated in the same way using the Context Interchange framework. The proposed framework provides a logic-based object-oriented formalsim for representing and reasoning about data semantics in disparate systems, and has been validated in a prototype implementation providing mediated data access to both traditional and web-based information sources.

TL;DR: Margrave is presented, a software suite for analyzing role-based access-control policies that includes a verifier that analyzes policies written in the XACML language, translating them into a form of decision-diagram to answer queries and provides semantic differencing information between versions of policies.
Abstract: Sensitive data are increasingly available on-line through the Web and other distributed protocols. This heightens the need to carefully control access to data. Control means not only preventing the leakage of data but also permitting access to necessary information. Indeed, the same datum is often treated differently depending on context. System designers create policies to express conditions on the access to data. To reduce source clutter and improve maintenance, developers increasingly use domain-specific, declarative languages to express these policies. In turn, administrators need to analyze policies relative to properties, and to understand the effect of policy changes even in the absence of properties. This paper presents Margrave, a software suite for analyzing role-based access-control policies. Margrave includes a verifier that analyzes policies written in the XACML language, translating them into a form of decision-diagram to answer queries. It also provides semantic differencing information between versions of policies. We have implemented these techniques and applied them to policies from a working software application.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method for restricting access to data received by a computer over a network by filtering certain data from the data received is presented, where a web page requested by the user contains only a minimum of objectionable or target data, the user may receive a portion of the filtered web page for downloading and viewing on her computer.
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for restricting access to data received by a computer over a network by filtering certain data from the data received. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a computer based method for filtering objectionable or target text data from World Wide Web pages which are received by a computer system connected to the Internet. According to the method, if the web page requested by the user contains only a minimum of objectionable or target data, the user may receive a portion of the filtered web page for downloading and viewing on his or her computer. If the web page requested contains a large amount of objectionable or target data, the invention will cause a “forbidden” page to be displayed on the user's computer monitor.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system, method, and article of manufacture are provided for implementing information services patterns associated with a relational database management system in an object-oriented persistence architecture, where data is controlled in the database utilizing a data retrieval mechanism encapsulated in a data handler.
Abstract: A system, method, and article of manufacture are provided for implementing information services patterns associated with a relational database management system in an object-oriented persistence architecture. An object attribute is translated to and from a database value utilizing a database. Data is controlled in the database utilizing a data retrieval mechanism encapsulated in a data handler. Data access to the database is then organized among a plurality of business entities utilizing a plurality of business objects. Multiple business objects are retrieved across a network in one access operation. Retrieved data is mapped into objects. Then a warning is provided upon retrieval of objects missing at least one attribute. The warning includes information on how to handle the at least one missing attribute.

TL;DR: A data retrieval system that includes a computer system having a processor that supports operation of at least one software application that is used for retrieving data in the computer system is defined in this paper.
Abstract: A data retrieval system that includes a computer system having a processor that supports operation of at least one software application that is used for retrieving data in the computer system. A plurality of storage media are communicatively coupled to the processor with the plurality of storage media having data stored in at least one of the plurality of storage media. The software application has a retrieval module for retrieving data from the plurality of storage media, and a storage and backup map is included that indicates to the retrieval module a particular location of the data that is to be retrieved by the retrieval module.
