TL;DR: This short paper presents a brief overview of asymmetric environments, the proposed mechanism called Broadcast Disks to provide database access in asymmetric communication environments, a novel approach to organizing broadcast disks and some initial simulation results.
Abstract: Mobile computers and wireless networks are emerging technologies which will soon make ubiquitous computing a reality. In the wireless environment, mobile clients may often be disconnected from stationary server machines or may have only a low-bandwidth channel for sending messages to servers. This environment raises new challenges for the support of database applications for three reasons: 1) the limited storage capacities of mobile machines, 2) the inability to accurately predict the future data needs of many data-intensive applications, and 3) the need to provide clients with new or updated data values in order to ensure consistent data access. One way (perhaps the only way) to address these challenges is to provide the stationary server machines with a relatively high bandwidth channel over which to broadcast portions of the database. Wireless networks are but one compelling example of the more general class of asymmetric cornmunication environments, which also includes CATV networks and information distribution services. We have proposed a mechanism called Broadcast Disks to provide database access in asymmetric communication environments. By appropriate organization of the broadcast program, an arbitrarlly fine-grained memory hierarchy can be created. Such a hierarchy raises fundamental new issues for pre-fetching and client cache management. In this short paper we present a brief overview of asymmetric environments, our novel approach to organizing broadcast disks and some initial simulation results.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and system of managing performance of data transfers for a data access system providing data transfers from content servers to remote users in response to user requests, includes calculating performance data summaries at least at a subset of the user sites and transmitting the data for receipt for remote summarization and storage.
Abstract: A method and system of managing performance of data transfers for a data access system providing data transfers from content servers to remote users in response to user requests, includes calculating performance data summaries at least at a subset of the user sites and transmitting the data for receipt for remote summarization and storage. The data include information indicative of transfer size, throughput, transfer time, source, time and date. The method and system include selecting a quantity of the performance data received, preferably over a time interval, and summarizing and storing the data. Further summarizes can also be calculated. The data may be used to ascertain conditions and manage the performance of the data access system. In the preferred embodiment, the method and system measure performance of Internet HTTP server applications. The method and system can monitor the performance of a plurality of data access systems, selecting performance data depending on the source of the data transfer for separate summarization and storage thus enabling a high volume of data transfer monitoring.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a system for servicing a computer controlled machine consisting of a device operable to perform a function, a controller controlling the operation of that device, and a data access port for transferring data and commands from the controller to the service tool.
Abstract: A system for servicing a computer controlled machine comprising: a computer controlled machine including a device operable to perform a function, a controller controlling the operation of that device, and a data access port for transferring data and commands from the controller; and a service tool operably connected to the data access port, the service tool including a remote communications capability, a computer, and diagnostics and graphing software; and an expert observer system operably linked to the remote communications capability of the service tool and including historical machine data, machine sales information, software revisions for the controller, additional diagnostics software, and an expert observer capable of providing a mentor capability to the operator of a service tool.

TL;DR: A data import system (100) enables access to data of multiple data sources of different formats (200-302) and provides an interface for importing data (200) into a data analysis system (210).
Abstract: A data import system (100) enables access to data of multiple data sources of different formats (201-302) and provides an interface for importing data (200) into a data analysis system (210). The interface (205) enables a user to customize the formatting of the data as the data is being imported (200) into a data analysis system (210). A user may select first user defined options (410) for operating on a first data set received during a data importation process (200). An intermediate representation of the data set (204) is generated based on the user first defined options (410). A user may specify second user defined options (410) based on the intermediate representation (204) during the data importation process (200). The second user defined options (410) are processed to produce a final data representation (208) of the data set to be used for analysis of the data. The intermediate representation may be a data table (204). The processing of a data set may include merging a first and second data set (206) to produce the final data representation (208). The second user defined options (410) may enable a user to select a basic operation for merging (206) the data sets or to select a non-basic operation for merging (206) the data sets. The basic operation may combine data sets in response to a user's selection of a first graphical interface control (520, 550), and the non-basic operation may combine the data sets based on user selection of at least two graphical interface controls (510, 530, 540) from a group of graphical interface controls.

TL;DR: This article developed a perspective based on an analysis of the process of scientific production and the creation, packaging, and exchange of data streams, and provided an example of how constructivist studies can contribute to policy analysis.
Abstract: Issues surrounding data access, ownership, and control raise important issues for science policy. The new sociology of science has examined many features of scientific knowledge and practice, but has made only preliminary efforts to study data access. Building on ethnographic studies of scientific laboratories (and other constructivist work), this article suggests how the new sociology of science can study data access empirically. The article develops a perspective based on an analysis of the process of scientific production and the creation, packaging, and exchange of data streams. It also provides an example of how constructivist studies can contribute to policy analysis.
