TL;DR: The SSW system minimizes the learning curve when doing research away from the home institution or when correlating results from multiple experiments, and provides a consistent look and feel at co-investigator institutions.
Abstract: The SolarSoftWare (SSW) system is a set of integrated software libraries, databases and system utilities which provide a common programming and data analysis environment for solar physics. Primarily an IDL based system, SSW is a collection of common data management and analysis routines derived from the Yohkoh and SOHO missions, the Solar Data Analysis Center, the astronomy libraries and other packages. The SSW environment is designed to provide a consistent look and feel at co-investigator institutions and facilitate sharing and exchange of data. The SSW system minimizes the learning curve when doing research away from the home institution or when correlating results from multiple experiments.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight the need to fully take into account the complexity of the systems to be managed and to give more attention to uncertainties in the management of water resources.
Abstract: The management of water resources is currently undergoing a paradigm shift toward a more integrated and participatory management style. This paper highlights the need to fully take into account the complexity of the systems to be managed and to give more attention to uncertainties. Achieving this requires adaptive management approaches that can more generally be defined as systematic strategies for improving management policies and practices by learning from the outcomes of previous management actions. This paper describes how the principles of adaptive water management might improve the conceptual and methodological base for sustainable and integrated water management in an uncertain and complex world. Critical debate is structured around four questions: (1) What types of uncertainty need to be taken into account in water management? (2) How does adaptive management account for uncertainty? (3) What are the characteristics of adaptive management regimes? (4) What is the role of social learning in managing change? Major transformation processes are needed because, in many cases, the structural requirements, e.g., adaptive institutions and a flexible technical infrastructure, for adaptive management are not available. In conclusion, we itemize a number of research needs and summarize practical recommendations based on the current state of knowledge.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the so-called field-tested and grounded technological rule as a possible product of Mode 2 research with the potential to improve the relevance of academic research in management.
Abstract: The relevance problem of academic management research in organization and management is an old and thorny one. Recent discussions on this issue have resulted in proposals to use more Mode 2 knowledge production in our field. These discussions focused mainly on the process of research itself and less on the products produced by this process. Here the focus is on the so-called field-tested and grounded technological rule as a possible product of Mode 2 research with the potential to improve the relevance of academic research in management. Technological rules can be seen as solution-oriented knowledge. Such knowledge may be called Management Theory, while more description-oriented knowledge may be called Organization Theory. In this article the nature of technological rules in management is discussed, as well as their development, their use in actual management practice and the potential for cross-fertilization between Management Theory and Organization Theory.

TL;DR: The results of this study show that the technologies of cloud and big data can be used to enhance the performance of the healthcare system so that humans can then enjoy various smart healthcare applications and services.
Abstract: The advances in information technology have witnessed great progress on healthcare technologies in various domains nowadays. However, these new technologies have also made healthcare data not only much bigger but also much more difficult to handle and process. Moreover, because the data are created from a variety of devices within a short time span, the characteristics of these data are that they are stored in different formats and created quickly, which can, to a large extent, be regarded as a big data problem. To provide a more convenient service and environment of healthcare, this paper proposes a cyber-physical system for patient-centric healthcare applications and services, called Health-CPS, built on cloud and big data analytics technologies. This system consists of a data collection layer with a unified standard, a data management layer for distributed storage and parallel computing, and a data-oriented service layer. The results of this study show that the technologies of cloud and big data can be used to enhance the performance of the healthcare system so that humans can then enjoy various smart healthcare applications and services.
