TL;DR: It is envisioned that next generation database systems should interpret queries by their intent, rather than as a contract carved in stone for complete and correct answers, and response times should be close to instant such that they allow a scientist to interact with the system and explore the data in a contextualized way.
Abstract: There is a clear need for interactive exploration of extremely large databases, especially in the area of scientific data management where ingestion of multiple Terabytes on a daily basis is foreseen. Unfortunately, current data management technology is not well-suited for such overwhelming demands. In light of these challenges, we should rethink some of the strict requirements database systems adopted in the past. We envision that next generation database systems should interpret queries by their intent, rather than as a contract carved in stone for complete and correct answers. The result set should aid the user in understanding the database's content and provide guidance to continue the data exploration journey. A scientist can stepwise explore deeper and deeper into the database, and stop when the result content and quality reaches his satisfaction point. At the same time, response times should be close to instant such that they allow a scientist to interact with the system and explore the data in a contextualized way.Several research directions are carved out to realize this vision. They range from engineering a novel database kernel where speed rather than completeness is the first class citizen, up to refusing to process a costly query in the first place, but providing advice on how to reformulate it instead, or even providing alternatives the system believes might be relevant for the exploration patterns observed.

TL;DR: The Intranet/Internet/Web-based data management tool as discussed by the authors provides a common GUI for requesting, customizing, scheduling and viewing of various types of unpriced call detail data reports pertaining to a customer's telecommunications network traffic.
Abstract: An Intranet/Internet/Web-based data management tool (17) that provides a common GUI (207) enabling the requesting, customizing, scheduling and viewing of various types of unpriced call detail data reports pertaining to a customer's telecommunications network traffic (22). The Intranet/Internet/Web-based (17) reporting system appllication comprises a novel Web-based, client-server application that enables customers to access their own relevant data information timely, rapidly and accurately through a client GUI. A periodic acquisition of data from the customer's telecommunications network (22) at a user-specified frequency and configured to meet real-time traffic reporting requirements (34). The system infrastructure provided enables secure initiation, acquisition, and presentation of unpriced call detail and statistical data reports to customers.

TL;DR: In this paper, a logical data model is defined using a data-modeling framework, which enables a user to define the logical data models using a series of graphical user interfaces (GUI) or an application-programming interface (API).
Abstract: A logical data model is defined using a data-modeling framework. The data-modeling framework enables a user to define the logical data model using a series of graphical user interfaces (GUI) or an application-programming interface (API). The data-modeling framework dynamically translates the logical data model into a corresponding physical data model. The logical data model can be changed using the GUI or API and the physical data model is automatically adjusted to accommodate the changes to the logical data model. The logical data model extends capabilities of the physical data model and automatically allows these capabilities to be available to software developers using an application framework integrated with the data-modeling framework. The application framework enables the developer to configure various application features and data management operations using GUI or API. The application framework is tightly coupled with the data-modeling framework such that changes in the logical data model is automatically reflected in the applications.
