Abstract: Just as the Internet is shifting its focus from information and communication to a knowledge delivery infrastructure, we see the Grid moving from computation and data management to a pervasive, worldwide knowledge management infrastructure. We have the technology to store and access data, but we seem to lack the ability to transform data tombs into useful data and extract knowledge from them. We review some of the current and future technologies that will impact the architecture, computational model, and applications of future grids. We attempt to forecast the evolution of computational grids into what we call the next-generation grid, with a particular focus on the use of semantics and knowledge discovery techniques and services. We propose a comprehensive software architecture for the next-generation grid, which integrates currently available services and components in Semantic Web, Semantic Grid, P2P, and ubiquitous systems. We'll also discuss a case study that shows how some new technologies can improve grid applications.

Abstract: A database management system architecture is described that facilitates the implementation of data management extensions for relational database systems. The architecture defines two classes of data management extensions alternative ways of storing relations called relation “storage methods”, and access paths, integrity constraints, or triggers which are “attachments” to relations. Generic sets of operations are defined for storage methods and attachments, and these operations must be provided in order to add a new storage method or attachment type to the system. The data management extension architecture also provides common services for coordination of storage method and attachment execution. This article describes the data management extension architecture along with some implementation issues and techniques.

Abstract: This article assesses the contribution of management of knowledge across organizational and professional boundaries towards improved public services. We empirically investigate the potential for knowledge sharing within the context of the NHS modernization agenda, taking as our focus the current ‘patient safety’ policy agenda. Specifically, we evaluate the introduction of a knowledge management system, namely the National Reporting and Learning System (NRSL) and its impact in the area of operating theatres within a university teaching hospital. We suggest that government policy in this area needs to reflect more upon limits to the management of knowledge and issues of the nature of knowledge, professional cultures and institutional power and politics.

Abstract: Data mining is one of the most important steps of the knowledge discovery in databases process and is considered as significant subfield in knowledge management. Research in data mining continues growing in business and in learning organization over coming decades. This review paper explores the applications of data mining techniques which have been developed to support knowledge management process. The journal articles indexed in ScienceDirect Database from 2007 to 2012 are analyzed and classified. The discussion on the findings is divided into 4 topics: (i) knowledge resource; (ii) knowledge types and/or knowledge datasets; (iii) data mining tasks; and (iv) data mining techniques and applications used in knowledge management. The article first briefly describes the definition of data mining and data mining functionality. Then the knowledge management rationale and major knowledge management tools integrated in knowledge management cycle are described. Finally, the applications of data mining techniques in the process of knowledge management are summarized and discussed.
