04 Nov 2004TL;DR: A product data exchange system 300 is used for exchanging technical product data between respective computer systems of a plurality of collaborating companies.
Abstract: A product data exchange system 300 is used for exchanging technical product data between respective computer systems (310, 320, 340, 350, 360) of a plurality of collaborating companies. At least a computer system (310) of a first one of the collaborating companies includes a plurality of distinct data management systems (312, 314, 316), such as CAD, PLM, ERP, each for creating respective technical product data. The system (310) also includes an editing system (318) for importing technical product data relating to a userselectable project from a plurality of the data management systems, creating an exchange package representing user-selectable parts of the imported technical product data; and providing the exchange package to a computer system located at at least one of the other collaborating companies.

02 Nov 2009TL;DR: This paper proposes an efficient approach to build multi-dimensional index for Cloud computing system using the combination of R-tree and KD-tree to organize data records and offer fast query processing and efficient index maintenance.
Abstract: Recently, the cloud computing platform is getting more and more attentions as a new trend of data management. Currently there are several cloud computing products that can provide various services. However, currently the cloud platforms only support simple keyword-based queries and can't answer complex queries efficiently due to lack of efficient index techniques. In this paper we propose an efficient approach to build multi-dimensional index for Cloud computing system. We use the combination of R-tree and KD-tree to organize data records and offer fast query processing and efficient index maintenance. Our approach can process typical multi-dimensional queries including point queries and range queries efficiently. Besides, frequent change of data on big amount of machines makes the index maintenance a challenging problem, and to cope with this problem we proposed a cost estimation-based index update strategy that can effectively update the index structure. Our experiments show that our indexing techniques improve query efficiency by an order of magnitude compared with alternative approaches, and scale well with the size of the data. Our approach is quite general and independent from the underlying infrastructure and can be easily carried over for implementation on various Cloud computing platforms.

01 Nov 2001TL;DR: A tutorial on knowledge management (KM) and a roadmap of this special issue around the knowledge life-cycle are presented, addressing three key views: codification, various knowledge environments, and cognitive aspects.
Abstract: We present a tutorial on knowledge management (KM) and a roadmap of this special issue around the knowledge life-cycle. Knowledge management is a discipline that provides a strategy, process and technology to share and leverage information and expertise that increases our level of understanding, to more effectively solve problems and make decisions. We address three key views: (1) codification (tacit and explicit knowledge types); (2) various knowledge environments; and (3) cognitive aspects, followed by detailed descriptions of features and technology, and how this capability is being leveraged in forward-looking organizations.
