TL;DR: An overview of the SDMS concept is presented and its implementation in a prototype system for retrieving information from both a symbolic database management system and from an optical videodisk is described.
Abstract: Spatial data management is a technique for organizing and retrieving information by positioning it in a graphical data space (GDS). This graphical data space is viewed through a color raster-scan display which enables users to traverse the GDS surface or zoom into the image to obtain greater detail. In contrast to conventional database management systems, in which users access data by asking questions in a formal query language, a spatial data management system (SDMS) presents the information graphically in a form that seems to encourage browsing and to require less prior knowledge of the contents and organization of the database. This paper presents an overview of the SDMS concept and describes its implementation in a prototype system for retrieving information from both a symbolic database management system and an optical videodisk.

TL;DR: The POSTGRES as mentioned in this paper data model is a relational model that has been extended with abstract data types, data of type procedure, and attribute and procedure inheritance, which can be used to simulate a wide variety of semantic and object-oriented data modeling constructs including aggregation and generalization, complex objects with shared subobjects, and attributes that reference tuples in other relations.
Abstract: : This paper describes the data model for POSTGRES, a next-generation extensible database management system being developed at the University of California StR86 The data model is a relational model that has been extended with abstract data types, data of type procedure, and attribute and procedure inheritance These mechanisms can be used to simulate a wide variety of semantic and object-oriented data modeling constructs including aggregation and generalization, complex objects with shared subobjects, and attributes that reference tuples in other relations

TL;DR: A new, enhanced GDMP architecture and prototype implementation that uses Globus data-grid tools for efficient file replication is presented and it is explained how this architecture can address object replication issues in an object-oriented database management system.
Abstract: Data replication is a key issue in a data grid and can be managed in different ways and at different levels of granularity: for example, at the file level or the object level. In the high-energy physics community, data grids are being developed to support the distributed analysis of experimental data. We have produced a prototype data replication tool, the Grid Data Management Pilot (GDMP) that is in production use in one physics experiment, with middleware provided by the Globus toolkit used for authentication, data movement and other purposes. We present a new, enhanced GDMP architecture and prototype implementation that uses Globus data-grid tools for efficient file replication. We also explain how this architecture can address object replication issues in an object-oriented database management system. File transfer over wide-area networks requires specific performance tuning in order to gain optimal data transfer rates. We present performance results obtained with GridFTP, an enhanced version of FTP, and discuss tuning parameters.

TL;DR: An aircraft data management system provides a passenger seated on the aircraft with a number of entertainment and productivity enhancing options as mentioned in this paper. But this system is not applicable to other venues have identifiable seating locations such as buses, passenger ships, hotels and auditoriums.
Abstract: An aircraft data management system provides a passenger seated on the aircraft with a number of entertainment and productivity enhancing options. Such options include, without limitation, video (194), audio (196), internet (190), airplane systems data (198) and power (162). Located proximate to each seat group is an integrated seat box (18) that includes a network interface card that identifies a requesting passenger for proper directing of the required data and/or power from devices that interface with a network controller (186) back to the requesting passenger. Both on-aircraft and off-aircraft devices may be accessed by the system. While particularly drawn to aircraft, the data management system is also applicable to other venues have identifiable seating locations such as buses, passenger ships, hotels and auditoriums.
