03 Apr 1991TL;DR: It is shown that many query processing algorithms can manipulate compressed data just as well as decompressed data, and that processing compressed data can speed query processing by a factor much larger than the compression factor.
Abstract: Data compression is widely used in data management to save storage space and network bandwidth. The authors outline the performance improvements that can be achieved by exploiting data compression in query processing. The novel idea is to leave data in compressed state as long as possible, and to only uncompress data when absolutely necessary. They show that many query processing algorithms can manipulate compressed data just as well as decompressed data, and that processing compressed data can speed query processing by a factor much larger than the compression factor. >

20 Jul 2011TL;DR: This paper presents the main design decisions of SciDB, including decisions concerning a high-level, SQL-like query language, the issues facing the query optimizer and executor and efficient storage management for arrays.
Abstract: SciDB is an open-source analytical database oriented toward the data management needs of scientists. As such it mixes statistical and linear algebra operations with data management ones, using a natural nested multidimensional array data model. We have been working on the code for two years, most recently with the help of venture capital backing. Release 11.06 (June 2011) is downloadable from our website (SciDB.org).
This paper presents the main design decisions of SciDB. It focuses on our decisions concerning a high-level, SQL-like query language, the issues facing our query optimizer and executor and efficient storage management for arrays. The paper also discusses implementation of features not usually present in DBMSs, including version control, uncertainty and provenance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method and apparatus for storing data on application-level activity and other user information to enable real-time multi-dimensional reporting about a user of a mobile data network.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for storing data on application-level activity and other user information to enable real-time multi-dimensional reporting about a user of a mobile data network. A data manager receives information about application-level activity from a mobile data network and stores the information to provide dynamic real-time reporting on network usage. The data manager comprises a database, data processing module, and analytics module. The database stores the application-level data for a predetermined period of time. The data processing module monitors the data to determine if it corresponds to a set of defined reports. If the data is relevant, the processing module updates the defined reports. The analytics module accesses the database to retrieve information satisfying operator queries about network usage. If the operator chooses to convert the query into a defined report, the analytics module creates a newly defined report and populates it accordingly.

TL;DR: The requirements and innovative technology for an integrated disaster management communication and information system are sketched, addressing in particular network, configuration, scheduling and data management issues during the response and recovery phases.
Abstract: Disaster response and recovery efforts require timely interaction and coordination of public emergency services in order to save lives and property. Today, IT is used in this field only to a limited extent, but there is a tremendous potential for increasing efficiency and effec- tiveness in coping with a disaster. In this paper we sketch requirements and innovative technology for an integrated disaster management communication and information system, addressing in particular network, configuration, scheduling and data management issues during the response and recovery phases.
