TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a method for generating a query for a database for information stored in the database and then generating an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) element to represent information received from the query.
Abstract: A method is provided in one example and includes generating a query for a database for information stored in the database. The information relates to data discovered through a capture system. The method further includes generating an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) element to represent information received from the query. A rule based on the OLAP element is generated and the rule affects data management for one or more documents that satisfy the rule. In more specific embodiments, the method further includes generating a capture rule that defines items the capture system should capture. The method also includes generating a discovery rule that defines objects the capture system should register. In still other embodiments, the method includes developing a policy based on the rule, where the policy identifies how one or more documents are permitted to traverse a network.

TL;DR: In this article, an electronic messager with a predictive text editor, including a storage unit for storing a data structure associating, for each one of a plurality of a user's contacts, usage data for the user's history of usage of words in communications with the user contact, a data manager coupled with the storage unit, and for updating the data structure as additional communications with each user contact are performed and additional usage data is obtained therefrom.
Abstract: An electronic messager with a predictive text editor, including a storage unit for storing a data structure associating, for each one of a plurality of a user's contacts, usage data for the user's history of usage of words in communications with the user contact, a data manager coupled with the storage unit for generating the data structure in the storage unit, and for updating the data structure as additional communications with each user contact are performed and additional usage data is obtained therefrom, and a text predictor coupled with the storage unit, for receiving as input a character string and a designated user contact, and for generating as output an ordered list of predicted. A method is also described and claimed.

TL;DR: A retrospective of the Darmstadt database system project, also known as DASDBS, is presented, aimed at providing data management support for advanced applications, such as geo-scientific information systems and office automation.
Abstract: A retrospective of the Darmstadt database system project, also known as DASDBS, is presented. The project is aimed at providing data management support for advanced applications, such as geo-scientific information systems and office automation. Similar to the dichotomy of RSS and RDS in System R, a layered architectural approach was pursued: a storage management kernel serves as the lowest common denominator of the requirements of the various applications classes, and a family of application-oriented front-ends provides semantically richer functions on top of the kernel. The lessons that were learned from building the DASDBS system are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the following issues: the role of nested relations, the experiences with using object buffers for coupling the system with the programming-language environment and the learning process in implementing multilevel transactions. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and methodology for the acquisition of medical data from multiple, at-home patient measurement devices transfers the data via telephone communications to a remotely accessed data management and display system such as a Web-based data management system.
Abstract: A system and methodology for the acquisition of medical data from multiple, at-home patient measurement devices transfers the data via telephone communications to a remotely accessed data management and display system such as a Web-based data management system. The measurement device, which supports two-way communications between the patient and the database system, is extensible to support multiple plug-in medical devices and devices for patient input or identification. Collection of data is mediated through an interface device that is connected via a digital link (serial, network, or digital RF link) to single or multiple patient measurement devices. This interface device is connected to a network via wide area network means including standard phone lines. In the preferred embodiment, data transfer is mediated through pervasive DTMF phone networks. Although DTMF is the preferred format, alternative analog or digital audio tone formats may be used.

TL;DR: This paper reviews recent results by the authors that aim to achieve spatial keyword querying functionality that is easy to use, relevant to users, and can be supported efficiently.
Abstract: The web is increasingly being used by mobile users. In addition, it is increasingly becoming possible to accurately geo-position mobile users and web content. This development gives prominence to spatial web data management. Specifically, a spatial keyword query takes a user location and user-supplied keywords as arguments and returns web objects that are spatially and textually relevant to these arguments. This paper reviews recent results by the authors that aim to achieve spatial keyword querying functionality that is easy to use, relevant to users, and can be supported efficiently. The paper covers different kinds of functionality as well as the ideas underlying their definition.
