TL;DR: It is argued that the forms of representation used by designers, such as drawings and physical models, have both abstract and actual properties and that this combination is important for their representational function.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the various movements from abstraction to actuality in the context of design, with particular reference to architecture, first in terms of the design process and second in terms of the interpretation of architecture by observers.Design/methodology/approach – The paper focuses on the designers' use of forms of representation, such as drawings, with reference to the cybernetic understanding of conversation. This account is then used to discuss the representational properties of architecture itself and to relate this back to the design process.Findings – It is argued that the forms of representation used by designers, such as drawings and physical models, have both abstract and actual properties and that this combination is important for their representational function. The ambiguity in the interpretation of drawings and models is not only useful in generating ideas but also appropriate given the ambiguity in the interpretation of the architecture they repre...

TL;DR: This paper describes the formalization and application of S@@@@ to the formal proofs of correctness of architecture designs, intended for the specifications of the outer and inner architectures of general purpose von Neumann style computers.
Abstract: In a previous paper [8], we had presented the notion of a family of languages for the multilevel design and description of computer architectures Details of a particular language family, currently under development, was also described One of the constituent members of this family is S

TL;DR: The lack of a current world industrial definition of "software test architecture" is considered and some recommendations on emerging future work to assist in the definition efforts are provided.
Abstract: This paper examines if the phrase "software test architecture" is universally defined and understood. While there may be some agreement on the phrase within select software communities, there is a lack of world standards on the topic. A lack of common definition and practice should be addressed with the maturing of industry segments. This paper considers the lack of a current world industrial definition of "software test architecture" and then provides some recommendations on emerging future work to assist in the definition efforts.

TL;DR: QUADRAD is capable of improving architecture quality for software-intensive systems in a systematic way and demonstrates how critical problems in the transition from requirements to architecture design can be mitigated.
Abstract: Over the past decade, the amount and complexity of software for almost any business sector has increased substantially. Unfortunately, the increased complexity of software in the systems to be built has often lead to a significant mismatch between the planned and the implemented products. One common problem is that system-wide quality attributes such as safety, reliability, performance, and modifiability are not sufficiently considered in software architecture design. Typically, they are addressed in an ad-hoc and unstructured fashion. Since rationales for architectural decisions are frequently missing, risks associated with those decisions can be neither identified, nor mitigated in a systematic way. Consequently, there is a high probability that the resulting software architecture fails to meet business goals and does not allow the building of an adequate system. This work presents QUADRAD, a framework for Quality-Driven Architecture Development. QUADRAD is capable of improving architecture quality for software-intensive systems in a systematic way. It supports the development of architectures that are optimized according to their essential quality requirements. Such architectures permit the building of systems that are better aligned to the principal market needs and business goals. QUADRAD is complemented by the Architecture Exploration Tool (AET), which supports architecture evaluations and helps in documenting the fundamental design decisions of an architecture. QUADRAD has been validated in three industrial projects. For each of these projects the architecture quality could be significantly increased. The results confirm the hypothesis of this work and demonstrate how critical problems in the transition from requirements to architecture design can be mitigated.

TL;DR: An architecture description language for logical architecture and its associated design method are presented that support recursive top-down design so that logical architectures for software systems of any scale and complexity can be designed.
Abstract: It is commonly agreed that architecture design is essential for development of complicated software and that depending on viewpoints software architecture can be captured in various views. Among them, the logical view is the earliest and foremost view that software developers should consider because it shapes the later phase of architecture design and the subsequent development. In this paper, we present an architecture description language for logical architecture and its associated design method. The main characteristic of the language and the design method are that they support recursive top-down design so that logical architectures for software systems of any scale and complexity can be designed. We apply them to a realistic system and show their efficacy.
