TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an information and advertising distribution system, in which a data server stores and updates a database of information items and advertisements, each categorized so that each has an associated information category.
Abstract: In summary, the present invention is an information and advertising distribution system. A data server stores and updates a database of information items and advertisements. The information items and advertisements are each categorized so that each has an associated information category. Workstations remotely located from the data server each include a display device, a communication interface for receiving at least a subset of the information items and advertisements in the data server's database and local memory for storing the information items and advertisements received from the data server. An information administrator in each workstation establishes communication with the data server from time to time so as to update the information items and advertisements stored in local memory with at least a subset of the information items and advertisements stored by the data server. An information display controller in each workstation displays on the workstation's display device at least a subset of the information items and advertisements stored in local memory when the workstation meets predefined idleness criteria. At least a subset of the workstations include a profiler for storing subscriber profile data. The subscriber profile data represents subscriber information viewing preferences, indicating information categories for which the subscriber does and does not want to view information items. The information display controller includes a filter for excluding from the information items displayed on the display device those information items Inconsistent with the subscriber profile data.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for transmitting data from a server to a client via blocks is described, where a user query for a solution set is transmitted to a server, which is then used to query a database for a first subset of the solution set, and when a second request from the client for the data in the database of the server is received, a second block of the data sets is queried from the database, built and then transmitted to the client over the network.
Abstract: A system and method are provided for transmitting data from a server to a client via blocks. A user query for a solution set is transmitted to a server, which is then used to query a database for a first subset of the solution set. A first block of data is built from data in the database of the server, containing a subset of the solution set, and is then sent to the client over a network. When a second request from the client for the data in the database of the server is received, a second block of the data sets is queried from the database, built, and then transmitted to the client over the network.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for collecting, storing, and retrieving data in a database management system is presented, where a transaction file corresponding to the transaction in an outbox of a workgroup user client is copied to an inbox identified to the workgroup client.
Abstract: A method of and system for collecting, storing, and retrieving data in a database management system. The database management system includes a master database server (4), at least one workgroup server (315), and a plurality of workgroup user clients (310). The workgroup server (315) is interposed between the master database server (4) and said workgroup user clients (310). The method creating a transaction in a local database resident on one of the workgroup user clients (310), entering the transaction into a transaction log resident on the workgroup user client (310), and creating a transaction file corresponding to the transaction in an outbox of said workgroup user client (310). Next, the transaction file is copied to an inbox identified to the workgroup user client (310) and updating the transaction file into a workgroup database (305) resident on the workgroup server (315). The workgroup database (305) includes a transaction log.

TL;DR: Zhang et al. as mentioned in this paper presented Casper1, a new framework in which mobile and stationary users can entertain location-based services without revealing their location information, which consists of two main components, the location anonymizer and the privacy-aware query processor.
Abstract: This paper tackles a major privacy concern in current location-based services where users have to continuously report their locations to the database server in order to obtain the service. For example, a user asking about the nearest gas station has to report her exact location. With untrusted servers, reporting the location information may lead to several privacy threats. In this paper, we present Casper1; a new framework in which mobile and stationary users can entertain location-based services without revealing their location information. Casper consists of two main components, the location anonymizer and the privacy-aware query processor. The location anonymizer blurs the users' exact location information into cloaked spatial regions based on user-specified privacy requirements. The privacy-aware query processor is embedded inside the location-based database server in order to deal with the cloaked spatial areas rather than the exact location information. Experimental results show that Casper achieves high quality location-based services while providing anonymity for both data and queries.
