TL;DR: The describing function method can be considered as an extension to nonlinear systems of the usual Nyquist stability criterion as discussed by the authors, and the first workers to apply the approach specifically to control systems were Tustin (1947) and Kochenburger (1950).
Abstract: The describing function method can be considered as an extension to nonlinear systems of the usual Nyquist stability criterion. The origins of the method can be traced back to nonlinear mechanics (Krylov and Bogoliuboff, 1932) but the first workers to apply the approach specifically to control systems were Tustin (1947) and Kochenburger (1950).

TL;DR: An analytic solution to the inverse describing function problem which results in expressions in the form of Volterra integral equations is provided and the conditions under which the representation for the non-linear element is unique are discussed and additional requirements for the unique definition of non-single-valued non- linear elements are given.

TL;DR: It is observed that the limit cycle frequencies obtained from the simulation of the fractional order nonlinear systems, agree with the theoretical values of the limit Cycles obtained from Nyquist plots of the fractionsal order plant and complex plot of the negative inverse of describing function.
