Abstract: Various commonly used organic solvents were dried with several different drying agents. A glovebox-bound coulometric Karl Fischer apparatus with a two-compartment measuring cell was used to determine the efficiency of the drying process. Recommendations are made relating to optimum drying agents/conditions that can be used to rapidly and reliably generate solvents with low residual water content by means of commonly available materials found in most synthesis laboratories. The practical method provides for safer handling and drying of solvents than methods calling for the use of reactive metals, metal hydrides, or solvent distillation.

Abstract: The sealed package is sterilized with a sterilant gas such as ethylene oxide prior to application of a desiccant pack. The desiccant pack is applied after sterilization and held in place by a metallic foil which is impermeable to moisture. A moisture permeable layer separates the desiccant pack from the plastic tray-like layer in which the surgical instrument is disposed. Absorbable co-polymer staples are maintained moisture-free by virtue of the desiccant pack being located on the opposite side of the moisture permeable layer.

Abstract: In this paper, the principles underlying the operation of desiccant cooling systems are recalled and their actual technological applications are discussed. Through a literature review, the feasibility of the desiccant cooling in different climates is proven and the advantages it can offer in terms energy and cost savings are underscored. Some commented examples are presented to illustrate how the desiccant cooling can be a perfective supplement to other cooling systems such as traditional vapour compression air conditioning system, the evaporative cooling, and the chilled-ceiling radiant cooling. It is notably shown that the desiccant materials, when associated with evaporative cooling or chilled-ceiling radiant cooling, can render them applicable under a diversity of climatic conditions.
