Abstract: Various techniques were developed covering analytical modeling of complex structures and automated input data generation and output data interpretation using the graphic system. Abstract: A direct covariance algorithm is presented far handling problems of component tolerance analysis and random input variations with a particular emphasis for utilization in computer-aided statistical electronic circuit design. It is shown that this result is applicable to a wide range of electronic circuit arrays having non-linear components. Moreover, a systematic procedure is developed for predicting in advance the expected accuracy. Numerical results comparing the direct covariance algorithm with up to 1000 Monte Carlo ensemble-averaged computer runs are provided. Contrary to popular belief, errors of 10 to 25% are obtained by using 25 to 100 Monte Carlo runs. Improvements in both accuracy and computational speed clearly demonstrate that the direct covariance algorithm is a versatile and effective computer-aided design tool.

Abstract: Computer simulations have been carried out of switching behaviour and design optimization of microwave PIN structures used in millimetre-wave communications. The simulation operates in the time domain and uses an implicit iterative method to obtain the internal distributions and terminal response of PIN diodes in a simple, but realistic circuit. The use of the program as a research tool aimed to the understanding of the internal processes, and also as a design tool for the optimization of the diode structure, will be presented together with a comparison of the computed results with those measured experimentally.

Two particular lines of investigation relating to routeing algorithms and flow control are discussed at greater length. The paper was presented at a one-day symposium on Networks, organized by the Computer-Aided Design specialist group of the British Computer Society and held on the 18th March 1974.
