Abstract: This study developed a thermal design tool for use in planning outdoor spaces by combining outdoor thermal environment simulations with a 3D-CAD system. The input and pre- processing methodology of this tool were developed so that the calculation could be performed using the CAD model that designers draw in the ordinary design process. A method for visually expressing the results of the calculations on 3D-CAD was developed. The results of the application of this simulation tool in an area of detached houses and actual urban block confirms that the simulation tool is able to simulate the effects of different spatial forms and materials, including the effect of shading by tall trees, on the surface temperature distribution and evaluation indexes of outdoor thermal environments.

Abstract: Since various machine parameters of existing electric machines are subject to confidentiality agreements of manufacturers, machine data sheets are often incomplete, making an accurate simulation and validation of machine design tools difficult but inevitable. Therefore, an electric machine design tool for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PSM) is introduced in this paper, enabling a holistic electric machine design for existing and new machines using few input parameters. The electric machine design tool is published under an LGPL open source license.

Abstract: The paper describes the development, testing, and initial findings of a design tool that generates parametrically defined, semi-automatically analyzed, and visualized structural performance of specific truss designs. The prototypical design tool provides structural truss solutions for spans of uniform to non-uniform surface curvatures. Real-time visual structural performance feedback enables the designer to more rapidly develop viable and potentially more efficient designs under user defined load conditions. The research methodology is an example of reinforcing structural learning and intuition within the design process. The research presents findings of the impact of iterative and interactive structural feedback through the development of a parametrically integrated structural truss analysis tool for aiding in design decision support.
