TL;DR: This paper presents a design tool in a format that can be understood by practitioners who come from a range of backgrounds and is intended as a tool to guide the design research and development process in the application of smart technologies.
Abstract: The research and development of attractive smart clothing, with truly embedded technologies, demands the merging of science and technology with art and design. This paper looks at a comparatively new and unique design discipline that has been given little prior consideration. The concept of 'wearables' crosses the boundaries between many disciplines. A gap exists for a common 'language' that facilitates creativity and a systematic design process. Designers of smart clothing require guidance in their enquiry, as gaining an understanding of issues such as; usability, manufacture, fashion, consumer culture, recycling and end user needs can seem forbidding and difficult to prioritise. This paper presents a design tool in a format that can be understood by practitioners who come from a range of backgrounds. The representation of the 'critical path' is intended as a tool to guide the design research and development process in the application of smart technologies.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mathematical programming approach to design international production-distribution networks for make-to-stock products with convergent manufacturing processes is proposed, and a typical model is presented, and the use of successive mixed-integer programming to solve it with commercial solvers is discussed.
Abstract: This text proposes a mathematical programming approach to design international production-distribution networks for make-to-stock products with convergent manufacturing processes. Various formulations of the elements of production-distribution network design models are discussed. The emphasis is put on modeling issues encountered in practice which have a significant impact on the quality of the logistics network designed. The elements discussed include the choice of an objective function, the definition of the planning horizon, the manufacturing process and product structures, the logistics network structure, demand and service requirements, facility layouts and capacity options, product flows and inventory modeling, as well as financial flows modeling. Major contributions from the literature are reviewed and a number of new formulation elements are introduced. A typical model is presented, and the use of successive mixed-integer programming to solve it with commercial solvers is discussed. A more general version of the model presented and the solution method described were implemented in a commercial supply chain design tool which is now available on the market.

TL;DR: NuMAD as discussed by the authors is a pre-processor for the ANSYS commercial finite element package that allows the creation of a 3D finite element model for a wind turbine blade.
Abstract: Sandia National Laboratories has an on-going effort to reduce the cost of energy and improve reliability for wind systems through improved blade design and manufacture. As part of this effort, a software tool named NuMAD (Numerical Manufacturing And Design) has been developed to greatly simplify the process of creating a three-dimensional finite element model for a modern wind turbine blade. NuMAD manages all blade information including databases of airfoils, materials, and material placement to enable efficient creation of models. NuMAD is a stand-alone, user-friendly, graphical pre-processor for the ANSYS ® commercial finite element package. The blade information contained in the NuMAD database is also used to manage capabilities such as output for CFD mesh, computation of blade cross section properties, and aeroelastic instability analysis of the blade. This user’s manual describes the capabilities and usage of NuMAD.

TL;DR: In this article, a unified and automated design methodology for synthesizing designs for multi-domain systems, such as mechatronic systems, is proposed, which can sharply reduce the time needed for analysis of designs that are infeasible or otherwise unattractive.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a software development tool that includes a model development interface, an aspect design tool, and a model transformation engine, which allows a developer to graphically design at least one software model.
Abstract: The present invention discloses a software development tool that includes a model development interface, an aspect design tool, and a model transformation engine. The model development interface can permit a developer to graphically design at least one software model. The aspect design tool for the model development interface can be configured to permit a user to specify at least one aspect to be applied to a model of the model development interface. The model transformation engine can transform a model of the model development interface having at least one aspect defined via the aspect design tool into automatically generated aspect code integrated with base language code.
