01 Jan 2017TL;DR: The Evolutionary Dungeon Designer is presented, the first step towards a mixed-initiative dungeon design tool which evolves dungeon rooms using game design patterns, as well as several metrics regarding the placement of treasures and enemies, in the fitness function of a genetic algorithm.
Abstract: Procedural Content Generation (PCG) can be a useful tool for aiding creativity in the process of designing game levels. Mixed-initiative level generation tools where a designer and an algorithm collaborate to iteratively generate game levels have been used for this purpose. However, it can be difficult for designers to work with tools that do not respond to the common language of games: game design patterns. We present the Evolutionary Dungeon Designer, the first step towards a mixed-initiative dungeon design tool which evolves dungeon rooms using game design patterns, as well as several metrics regarding the placement of treasures and enemies, in the fitness function of a genetic algorithm. Our results show that we are able to control the frequency, shape and type of design patterns, as well as properly place enemies and treasures in the generated rooms, using design pattern-related input parameters.

TL;DR: This paper describes an interactive (decision maker-computer) methodology for multiple response optimization of simulation models based on a multiple criteria optimization technique called the STEP method.
Abstract: Simulation is a popular tool for the design and analysis of manufacturing systems. The popularity of simulation is due to its flexibility, its ability to model systems when analytical methods have failed, and its ability to model the time dynamic behavior of systems. However, in and of itself, simulation is not a design tool; therefore, in order to optimize a simulation model, it often must be used in conjunction with an optimum-seeking method. This paper describes an interactive (decision maker-computer) methodology for multiple response optimization of simulation models. This approach is based on a multiple criteria optimization technique called the STEP method. The proposed methodology is illustrated with an example involving the optimization of a manufacturing system. >

07 Oct 2007TL;DR: Eyepatch is a tool for designing camera-based interactions, and the Eyepatch prototype is evaluated through deployment to students in an HCI course, describing the lessons learned about making computer vision more accessible, while retaining enough power and flexibility to be useful in a wide variety of interaction scenarios.
Abstract: Cameras are a useful source of input for many interactive applications, but computer vision programming is difficult and requires specialized knowledge that is out of reach for many HCI practitioners. In an effort to learn what makes a useful computer vision design tool, we created Eyepatch, a tool for designing camera-based interactions, and evaluated the Eyepatch prototype through deployment to students in an HCI course. This paper describes the lessons we learned about making computer vision more accessible, while retaining enough power and flexibility to be useful in a wide variety of interaction scenarios.
