26 Mar 2003TL;DR: A new approach to utility resource management focusing on coordinated provisioning of memory and storage resources is presented, which incorporates internal models of service behavior to predict the value of candidate resource allotments under changing load.
Abstract: Internet service utilities host multiple server applications on a shared server cluster. A key challenge for these systems is to provision shared resources on demand to meet service quality targets at least cost. This paper presents a new approach to utility resource management focusing on coordinated provisioning of memory and storage resources. Our approach is model-based: it incorporates internal models of service behavior to predict the value of candidate resource allotments under changing load. The model-based approach enables the system to achieve important resource management goals, including differentiated service quality, performance isolation, storage-aware caching, and proactive allocation of surplus resources to meet performance goals. Experimental results with a prototype demonstrate model-based dynamic provisioning under Web workloads with static content.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a novel distributed service discovery protocol based on the concepts of peer-to-peer caching of service advertisements and group-based intelligent forwarding of service requests for pervasive environments.
Abstract: The paper proposes a novel distributed service discovery protocol for pervasive environments. The protocol is based on the concepts of peer-to-peer caching of service advertisements and group-based intelligent forwarding of service requests. It does not require a service to be registered with a registry or lookup server. Services are described using the Web Ontology Language (OWL). We exploit the semantic class/subClass hierarchy of OWL to describe service groups and use this semantic information to selectively forward service requests. OWL-based service description also enables increased flexibility in service matching. We present simulation results that show that our protocol achieves increased efficiency in discovering services (compared to traditional broadcast-based mechanisms) by efficiently utilizing bandwidth via controlled forwarding of service requests.

TL;DR: The service process/service package matrix is introduced to meet the need to foster strategic thinking in services and to gain strategic insights by aligning the type of service package offered with thetype of process used to create the service and to have a better understanding of their service operations strategy.

TL;DR: This document provides an overview of the issues associated with the deployment of service functions in large-scale environments and identifies several key areas that the Service Function Chaining (SFC) working group will investigate to guide its architectural and protocol work and associated documents.
Abstract: This document provides an overview of the issues associated with the
deployment of service functions (such as firewalls, load balancers,
etc.) in large-scale environments. The term "service function
chaining" is used to describe the definition and instantiation of an
ordered list of instances of such service functions, and the
subsequent "steering" of traffic flows through those service
functions. The set of enabled service function chains reflects
operator service offerings and is designed in conjunction with
application delivery and service and network policy. This document
also identifies several key areas that the Service Function Chaining
(SFC) working group will investigate to guide its architectural and
protocol work and associated documents.
