Abstract: Recently developed rigorous theories have been used to investigate the diffraction efficiency behavior of both blazed and holographic gratings. In order to assist designers of spectrometric systems we have covered a complete range of blaze angles for triangular grooves and modulations for sinusoidal groove shape in first and second orders. Several types of mountings are included together with the role played by finite conductivity of aluminum. Useful classifications of both types of gratings are given, as they apply from the near uv to ir regions. Comparisons showing the close agreement between theory and experiment are presented.

Abstract: We have demonstrated the Talbot effect, the self-imaging of a periodic structure, with atom waves. We have measured the successive recurrence of these self-images as a function of the distance from the imaged grating. This is a near-field interference effect, which has several possible applications that are discussed.

Abstract: An electrically tunable Fresnel zone plate lens is demonstrated using nanoscale polymer-dispersed liquid crystal droplets. In the voltage-off state, the zone plate behaves like a positive lens. The measured diffraction efficiency is close to the theoretical limit and is controllable by voltage. The major advantages of such a Fresnel lens are simple fabrication, large aperture size, polarization independent, and fast switching speed, although the required operating voltage is relatively high.

Abstract: In this paper we discuss the properties of optical elements fabricated by holographically recording an ultrahigh spatial-frequency pattern in a photoresist mask followed by reactive ion etching to transfer this pattern into the surface of a quartz substrate. Such optical elements are environmentally durable, potentially easy to replicate, and exhibit diffraction efficiencies in excess of 85%. In addition, two other properties are reported for the first time. Such elements at normal (0°) incidence are antireflective, with broadband reflection coefficients as low as 0.035%. Also, the elements exhibit artificially produced birefringence making them useful as wave plates. These results may be particularly significant in the UV and IR, where damage-resistant antireflection coatings and transparent birefringent materials may not exist.

Abstract: We demonstrate permanent holographic storage in the green with high diffraction efficiency and recording sensitivity in TiO2 nanoparticle-dispersed methacrylate photopolymer films. It is shown that the diffraction efficiency as well as the recording sensitivity significantly increase with an increase of nanoparticle concentration. It is also found that volumetric shrinkage during holographic exposure is noticeably suppressed by inclusion of the nanoparticles.
