TL;DR: Theazed gratings can be generated over a considerable range of distances from the X-ray mask, thus demonstrating the ability to write gratings on a substrate of effectively arbitrary shape.
Abstract: Blazed gratings have been fabricated using gray-scale X-ray lithography. The gratings have high efficiency, low parasitic light, and high groove quality. The fabrication technique and resist characterization are described. The gratings can be generated over a considerable range of distances from the X-ray mask, thus demonstrating the ability to write gratings on a substrate of effectively arbitrary shape.

TL;DR: The photopolymer holographic recording materials, ULSH-500, based upon cationic ring-opening polymerization, has been further optimized for recording in an increased film thickness of 200 micrometers as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The photopolymer holographic recording materials, ULSH-500, based upon cationic ring-opening polymerization, has been further optimized for recording in an increased film thickness of 200 micrometers . The dynamic range attained, at least M/# equals 16, is substantially greater than previously reported, while concurrently the inherent low transverse shrinkage and high sensitivity characteristics of the material have been retained. Dynamic range or cumulative grating strength, (Sigma) (eta) i0.5, has been determined from co-locationally recorded peristrophic and angle multiplexed plane-wave gratings which exhibit low diffraction efficiencies between about 0.1 and 0.2%. Good Bragg selectivity consistent with the imaged thickness and sinc2 function behavior is observed for the multiplexed holograms, and both the angular response and the diffraction efficiency are stable without the need for post-imaging fixing procedures. Sensitivity is in the range of 1 to 10 cm/mJ, and the refractive index modulation achievable during consumption of the accessible dynamic range is n1 equals 1.3 X 10-2 at the read wavelength of 514.5 nm.© (1998) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. TL;DR: A novel design for a contact grating device with an incorporated Fabry-Perot resonator for high-power terahertz (THz) light generation was proposed and the diffraction efficiency of the fabricated device was close to the calculated value of 78% from the optimized design.
Abstract: A novel design for a contact grating device with an incorporated Fabry-Perot resonator is proposed for high-power terahertz (THz) light generation. We deposited a multilayer consisting of Ta(2)O(5) and Al(2)O(3) on a magnesium-doped stoichiometric LiNbO(3) substrate and fabricated grating grooves on the outermost layer. The multilayer was designed such that conditions for a Fabry-Perot resonator were satisfied for light diffracted by the grating. Consequently, the fraction of light transmitted into the LiNbO(3) substrate, i.e., the diffraction efficiency, was enhanced by the resonator. The diffraction efficiency of the fabricated device was 71%, which is close to the calculated value of 78% from the optimized design. THz light generation was also demonstrated with the contact grating device. The THz output of 0.41 μJ was obtained using near-infrared pump light of 2.7 mJ.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that it is much easier in the frequency domain than in the space domain to achieve a large enough diffraction bandwidth of volume holograms for the bandwidth of 100-fs pulses to be used for frequency-domain femtosecond pulse shaping.
Abstract: The Bragg selectivity of volume holograms makes them not well suited for many Fourier imaging processing applications in the space domain because they perform the function of a spatial filter and limit the field of view. Similarly, for femtosecond pulse holography they reduce the spectral bandwidth of the diffracted signal. However, we show both theoretically and experimentally that it is much easier in the frequency domain than in the space domain to achieve a large enough diffraction bandwidth of volume holograms for the bandwidth of 100-fs pulses to be used for frequency-domain femtosecond pulse shaping. The experiments were performed by nondegenerate four-wave mixing in photorefractive InP:Fe with femtosecond readout at 1.5 μm.

TL;DR: Diffraction phase gratings are employed in phase-shifting point diffraction interferometers to improve the interferometric fringe contrast as discussed by the authors, where the diffraction phase grating diffracts a zeroth order diffraction of light at a first power level to the test-beam window of a mask that is positioned at the image plane and a first-order diffraction at a second power to the reference-beam pinhole.
Abstract: Diffraction phase gratings are employed in phase-shifting point diffraction interferometers to improve the interferometric fringe contrast. The diffraction phase grating diffracts a zeroth-order diffraction of light at a first power level to the test-beam window of a mask that is positioned at the image plane and a first-order diffraction at a second power to the reference-beam pinhole. The diffraction phase grating is preferably selected to yield a desired ratio of the first power level to second power level.
