TL;DR: A matrix formalism for grating and prism compressors is introduced that simplifies the design of compressors with focusing optics and includes the possibility of considering dispersive elements such as gratings and prisms.
Abstract: A matrix formalism for grating and prism compressors is introduced. It is an extension of the standard ABCD matrix formalism for Gaussian optics, but includes the possibility of considering dispersive elements such as gratings and prisms. The full formation on the frequency-dependent phase shift is obtained to compute the time delay dispersion. The formalism simplifies the design of compressors with focusing optics. Information on beam divergence and astigmatism is also acquired. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-frequency laser (MFL) was demonstrated that runs simultaneously CW on 18 channels spaced by 103 GHz, with a stable and reproducible optical channel spacing owing to the reproducibility of the waveguide grating router.
Abstract: A multifrequency laser (MFL) is demonstrated that runs simultaneously CW on 18 channels spaced by 103 GHz. The laser emits -14.6-dBm power per wavelength channel into single-mode fiber. Each wavelength channel can be modulated at 1.24 Gb/s. The MFL exhibits a stable and reproducible optical channel spacing owing to the reproducibility of the waveguide grating router that serves as the intracavity filter element.

TL;DR: It is shown that an all-optical Hilbert transformer can be implemented using a uniform-period fiber Bragg grating with a properly designed amplitude-only grating apodization profile incorporating a single pi phase shift in the middle of the grating length.
Abstract: A simple all-fiber design for implementing an all-optical temporal Hilbert transformer is proposed and numerically demonstrated. We show that an all-optical Hilbert transformer can be implemented using a uniform-period fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a properly designed amplitude-only grating apodization profile incorporating a single π phase shift in the middle of the grating length. All-optical Hilbert transformers capable of processing arbitrary optical waveforms with bandwidths up to a few hundreds of gigahertz can be implemented using feasible FBGs.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a monochromatic (0.1 A) dye laser, which consists of a pair of Bragg phase gratings photodielectrically induced inside a bulk sample of poly (methyl methacrylate), PMMA, doped with rhodamine 6G.
Abstract: We describe a compact monochromatic (0.1 A) dye laser, which consists of a pair of Bragg phase gratings photodielectrically induced inside a bulk sample of poly (methyl methacrylate), PMMA, doped with rhodamine 6G. The laser frequency can be selected by choice of grating period from the usual broad (∼200 A) emission spectrum of the dye.

TL;DR: In this paper, a high-contrast grating (HCG) vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) was used as a source for external modulation for 40-Gbps differential-phase-shift-keyed signal with negligible power penalty.
Abstract: Recent advances in high-contrast grating (HCG) vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) emitting at 1550 nm is reported in this paper. The novel near-wavelength HCG has an ultrathin structure and broadband reflectivity. It enables a monolithic, simple fabrication process for realizing InP-based VCSELs emitting at ~1550 nm. We report 2.4-mW single-mode output under continuous-wave operation at 15°C. We show that, despite broadened by the Brownian motion, the HCG-VCSEL has a total linewidth of 60 MHz or a coherent length of 5 m in air, and an intrinsic linewidth <;20 MHz. Transmission of directly modulated 10 Gbps over 100-km dispersion-compensated single-mode fiber is demonstrated. Tunable HCG-VCSEL is demonstrated with the HCG integrated with a micro-electro-mechanical structure. Continuous wavelength tuning as wide as 26.3 nm is achieved. The tunable VCSEL was used as a source for external modulation for 40-Gbps differential-phase-shift-keyed signal and transmitted over 100-km dispersion-compensated link with negligible power penalty.
