TL;DR: In this article, a high sensitivity fiber-optic torsion sensor, which can measure twist rate and determine twist direction simultaneously based on a novel ultra-long-period fiber grating (ULPFG) with a period of up to several millimeters, is proposed and demonstrated.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate the higher temperature sensitivity of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor when it is clad with a metal of a large thermal expansion coefficient and show that the sensitivity of Bragg wavelength shift can be enhanced by about five (four) times.
Abstract: We demonstrate the higher temperature sensitivity of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor when it is clad with a metal of a large thermal expansion coefficient. With lead (solder) cladding, the sensitivity of Bragg wavelength shift can be enhanced by about five (four) times. A theoretical model was adopted to show quite consistent results. It was found that thermal annealing was crucial for preparing high-quality fiber Bragg grating sensors with metal claddings.

TL;DR: The design, fabrication, and performance of high-efficiency transmission gratings fabricated in bulk fused silica for use in high-power ultraviolet laser systems are described.
Abstract: We describe the design, fabrication, and performance of high-efficiency transmission gratings fabricated in bulk fused silica for use in high-power ultraviolet laser systems. The gratings exhibit a diffraction efficiency of 94% in order m=-1 and a damage threshold greater than 13>J/cm( 2) for 3-ns pulses at 351 nm. Model calculations and experimental measurements are in good agreement.

TL;DR: In this article, a narrow band large dynamic range, polarisation independent spectral resonances of long-period fiber gratings fabricated period-by-period with focused CO/sub 2/ laser pulses are demonstrated at 1490 and 1538 nm.
Abstract: Narrow band large dynamic range, polarisation independent spectral resonances of long-period fibre gratings fabricated period-by-period with focused CO/sub 2/ laser pulses are demonstrated at 1490 and 1538 nm. The observed cladding mode near field patterns in this wavelength range are presented.

TL;DR: An optical modulation element characterized by a two-dimensional phase type diffraction gratings, whose refractive index changes for each predetermined period along two different directions in a predetermined plane, is adopted in this paper.
Abstract: An optical modulation element characterized in that a two-dimensional phase type diffraction gratings, whose refractive index changes for each predetermined period along two different directions in a predetermined plane, is adopted, and a changing state of the refractive index is controlled to change characteristics of the diffraction grating, so that a diffraction phenomenon of light incident on the element is controlled.
