TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give an overview of recent progress in passive spectral filters and demultiplexers based on silicon-on-insulator photonic wire waveguides: ring resonators, interferometers, arrayed waveguide gratings, and echelle diffraction gratings.
Abstract: We give an overview of recent progress in passive spectral filters and demultiplexers based on silicon-on-insulator photonic wire waveguides: ring resonators, interferometers, arrayed waveguide gratings, and echelle diffraction gratings, all benefit from the high-index contrast possible with silicon photonics. We show how the current generation of devices has improved crosstalk levels, insertion loss, and uniformity due to an improved fabrication process based on 193 nm lithography.

Abstract: The guided-mode resonance behavior of the evanescent and propagating fields associated with an unslanted, planar diffraction grating is studied by means of the rigorous coupled-wave theory. For weakly modulated gratings, the condition on the guided-mode wave number of the corresponding unmodulated dielectric-layer waveguide may be used to predict the range of the incident angle or wavelength within which the resonances can be excited. Furthermore, the locations of the resonances are predicted approximately by the eigenvalue equation of the waveguide. As the modulation amplitude increases, the location and shape of the resonances are described in detail by the rigorous coupled-wave theory. The results presented demonstrate that the resonances can cause rapid variations in the intensity of the external propagating diffracted waves.

Abstract: We report electrical switching of the diffraction efficiency in volume Bragg gratings written holographically in polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs). Scanning electron microscopy confirms the volume nature of the gratings and shows that they consist of periodic PDLC planes. The diffraction efficiency can be switched from a high value (∼50%) to a value near zero at fields ∼11 V/μm.

TL;DR: In this paper, a high pressure fiber optic sensor using an in-fibre grating has been constructed, where the wavelength of peak reflection from an infiber grating is tracked as it is pressurised, and a wavelength shift of 0.22nm at 70MPa hydraulic pressure has been observed.
Abstract: A high pressure fibre optic sensor using an in-fibre grating has been constructed. The wavelength of peak reflection from an in-fibre grating is tracked as it is pressurised, and a wavelength shift of 0.22nm at 70MPa hydraulic pressure has been observed. This sensor is expected to be an attractive choice for ultrahigh-pressure monitoring.

TL;DR: In this paper, detailed instructions for the construction and operation of a diode laser system with optical feedback are presented, which uses feedback from a diffraction grating to provide a narrowband continuously tuneable source of light at red or near-IR wavelengths.
Abstract: Detailed instructions for the construction and operation of a diode laser system with optical feedback are presented. This system uses feedback from a diffraction grating to provide a narrow‐band continuously tuneable source of light at red or near‐IR wavelengths. These instructions include machine drawings for the parts to be constructed, electronic circuit diagrams, and prices and vendors of the items to be purchased. It is also explained how to align the system and how to use it to observe saturated absorption spectra of atomic cesium or rubidium.
