TL;DR: In this paper, a two-step procedure for air cooling of airfoils in a gas-turbine engine is proposed, where a laser beam is used to drill the holes and an EDM step is used only to form the diffuser shape.
Abstract: Air cooling of airfoils in a gas-turbine engine is effected through holes which terminate with a diffuser formation at the airfoil surface. The invention is directed to a two-step procedure whereby a laser beam drills the holes very quickly and cost-effectively and whereby an EDM step is relied upon only to form the diffuser shape. The EDM part of the procedure thus occupies but a fraction of the time previously required, and substantial overall economy is realized by integrating these two steps, which are preferably performed in the order stated but which, if desired, may alternatively be performed by laser driling after EDM formation of the diffuser shape.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for use with an apparatus which produces jets of water through a vertical water diffuser tube by supplying individually formed air bubble masses at regular intervals, which are followed by the water being drawn under the action of the bubble masses.
Abstract: A method is provided for use with an apparatus which produces jets of water through a vertical water diffuser tube by supplying individually formed air bubble masses at regular intervals, which are followed by the water being drawn under the action of the air bubble masses. The method improves the water processing efficiency and ability of the apparatus by defining the volumetric quantity of a formed air mass in relation to the diameter of the particular air diffuser tube and defining a certain relationship between the length L (m) of the tube through which the rises and the time interval T (sec) at which the individual air bubble masses are produced.

TL;DR: A diffused bubble aeration system for small scale water supplies includes a plurality of water holding vessels having water inlet and water outlet couplings operatively coupled in series for series flow of water through the successive vessels as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A diffused bubble aeration system for small scale water supplies includes a plurality of water holding vessels having water inlet and water outlet couplings operatively coupled in series for series flow of water through the successive vessels. The inlet and outlet openings are located substantially below the normal water level in the vessels, for example, substantially at the mid section of the respective vessels for equalization of volume and water level in the vessels. The series coupled vessels, barrels or drums comprise a first vessel having a supply water inlet coupling for coupling to a water supply and a last vessel or drum with a treated supply water outlet coupling to treated water supply water pump and pressurized treated water storage tank. Each vessel or drum is assembled to constitute a diffused bubble aeration stage having a spiral coil air diffuser arranged near the bottom of the vessel but spaced from the bottom of the vessel or drum for delivering diffuse low pressure air bubbles for stripping and purging volatile contaminants from supply water in the vessel. Each vessel or drum is formed with air inlet and outlet couplings with air inlet and outlet couplings and lines operatively coupled in parallel for parallel flow of diffused air through the water in the vessels or drums. The air outlet coupling at the top of each vessel vents the contaminant laden air. The drums or vessels comprise multiple stages for staged bubble aeration and staged flow or plug flow of supply water passing through the stages. The volume capacity of the drums is selected for residence time of supply water in the multiple stages adequate for staged aeration stripping and removal of volatile contaminants to a selected limit without substantial mixing between stages during aeration and while meeting current demand for supply water.

TL;DR: In this article, a portable portable dust collector with a motor and a diffuser is presented, where the motor is oriented radially and horizontally within the housing and the blower inlet oriented horizontally so that an open space is provided for free air flow between the filter and collection bags through the housing.
Abstract: A portable dust collector which includes a housing having a dust-proof chamber, a motor and blower enclosed within the chamber, a centrifugal blower driven by the motor and exhausting through a diffuser into the housing, a filter bag enclosing the top of the housing, a collection bag enclosing the bottom of the housing, and a support extending downwardly from the housing to the base for providing clearance below the housing sufficient for the collection bag. By positioning the motor within a dust-proof chamber inside the housing, the dust collector has better balance and portability and requires less floor and storage space than prior art collectors with exterior motors. The collector also includes a diffuser which is attached to the blower outlet and is shaped to direct the effluent from the blower downwardly into the collection bag. The diffuser includes a bell-shaped passage having a flared exit opening, which is greater in area than the mouth of the diffuser attached to the blower, so that the blower effluent is reduced in noise velocity prior to entering the collection bag. The motor is oriented radially and horizontally within the housing and the blower inlet oriented horizontally so that an open space is provided for free air flow between the filter and collection bags through the housing.

TL;DR: In this article, a diffuser is used to spread the air flow so that it substantially covers the heat exchanger area, which aids in spreading the flow of air to the peripheral portions of the heat exchange.
Abstract: A ventilation unit for heating or air-conditioning in a motor vehicle. The unit includes a blower and a heat exchanger, with a diffuser positioned in the flow of air from the blower. The diffuser spreads the air flow so that it substantially covers the heat exchanger area. A grid positioned between the diffuser and the heat exchanger aids in spreading the flow of air to the peripheral portions of the heat exchanger.

TL;DR: The performance of packed-column and diffused aeration for removing trihalomethanes from drinking water was related to water source, water temperature, contaminant concentration, and other process variables as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The performance of packed-column and diffused aeration for removing trihalomethanes from drinking water was related to water source, water temperature, contaminant concentration, and other process variables. Data obtained from this study were compared with theoretical predictions and with the results of previous feasibility studies. Based on efficiency and cost, packed-column aeration appears to be the more promising of the two technologies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a field study of a submerged diffuser operated during a demonstration of innovative dredging and disposal technologies, which indicated that the diffuser can be useful in limiting the initial dredged material movement, improving placement accuracy and reducing the extent of suspended solids at the discharge point.
Abstract: The availability of upland sites for dredged material disposal has become increasingly limited. Open-water disposal is one option available to address this problem, but broader environmental questions frequently must be treated at open-water sites especially when handling contaminated sediments. The Water Resources Engineering Group of the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) has been evaluating alternative methods and technologies to enhance the environmental acceptability of open-water disposal. This paper describes a field study of a submerged diffuser operated during a demonstration of innovative dredging and disposal technologies. Monitoring during the study included measurement of current velocities and suspended solids before and during the diffuser operation. Results indicate that the diffuser can be useful in limiting the initial dredged material movement, improving placement accuracy and reducing the extent of suspended solids at the discharge point.

TL;DR: In this paper, a twisted S-shaped bend diffuser is proposed, which is a diffuser with a centerline in the shape of a twisted “S,” and its performance is improved when interaction by the bend elements generates an adequate secondary flow inside the diffuser.
Abstract: This paper is the result of our research into the twisted S -shaped bend diffuser—the so-called coiled bend diffuser. It is a diffuser with a centerline in the shape of a twisted “S .” Our studies show that the performance characteristics of this bend diffuser are greatly improved when interaction by the bend elements generates an adequate secondary flow inside the diffuser. Full consideration was given to the influence of the divergent angle of the bend elements, consisting of the diffuser or curvature radius ratio of the bend, on these performance characteristics. The relation between diffuser performance and internal flow also was studied. Some guidelines for designing such a high performance diffuser is given.
