TL;DR: By considering both the kLa value and the statistical significance, the air‐lift reactor combined with a 20‐μm bulb diffuser was found to be the ideal reactor configuration for carbon monoxide mass transfer in an aqueous phase.
Abstract: Lignocellulosic biomass such as agri-residues, agri-processing by-products, and energy crops do not compete with food and feed, and is considered to be the ideal renewable feedstocks for biofuel production. Gasification of biomass produces synthesis gas (syngas), a mixture primarily consisting of CO and H(2). The produced syngas can be converted to ethanol by anaerobic microbial catalysts especially acetogenic bacteria such as various clostridia species. One of the major drawbacks associated with syngas fermentation is the mass transfer limitation of these sparingly soluble gases in the aqueous phase. One way of addressing this issue is the improvement in reactor design to achieve a higher volumetric mass transfer coefficient (k(L)a). In this study, different reactor configurations such as a column diffuser, a 20-μm bulb diffuser, gas sparger, gas sparger with mechanical mixing, air-lift reactor combined with a 20-μm bulb diffuser, air-lift reactor combined with a single gas entry point, and a submerged composite hollow fiber membrane (CHFM) module were employed to examine the k(L) a values. The k(L) a values reported in this study ranged from 0.4 to 91.08 h(-1). The highest k(L) a of 91.08 h(-1) was obtained in the air-lift reactor combined with a 20-μm bulb diffuser, whereas the reactor with the CHFM showed the lowest k(L) a of 0.4 h(-1). By considering both the k(L) a value and the statistical significance of each configuration, the air-lift reactor combined with a 20-μm bulb diffuser was found to be the ideal reactor configuration for carbon monoxide mass transfer in an aqueous phase.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used magnetic resonance velocimetry to acquire three-component mean velocity measurements for a set of conical diffusers with an annular inlet and showed strong coupling between the diffuser wall boundary layer development and the wake of the center body.
Abstract: In many practical applications of conical diffusers, the flow is fed by an annular flow passage formed by a center body. Flow separation, which occurs if the center body ends abruptly, is undesirable because it degrades the diffuser performance. The present experiment utilizes magnetic resonance velocimetry to acquire three-component mean velocity measurements for a set of conical diffusers with an annular inlet. The results show strong coupling between the diffuser wall boundary layer development and the wake of the center body. Coanda blowing is used to mitigate the center body wake separation. The diffuser wall boundary layer is thick in the absence of the central separation bubble and separates when Coanda blowing is too strong.

TL;DR: In this article, a feature of a toilet for reducing the density of the fluid in the bottom portion of a bathroom fixture to eliminate spray when desired is discussed. But, when not desired, for example, when a user is seated upon the bathroom fixture, this feature may be deactivated when the anti-spray feature is turned off.
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a novel feature of a toilet for reducing the density of the fluid in the bottom portion of a bathroom fixture to eliminate spray when desired. When not desired, for example, when a user is seated upon the bathroom fixture, this feature may be deactivated. In one form, when the anti-spray feature is turned off, the bubbles will have substantially disappeared in less than a few seconds. The bathroom fixture (toilet) is provided with an air source, such as an air pump, compressed air cylinder, or compressor, coupled by way of an air line or hose to an air diffuser chamber. When the air source is activated, a substantial portion of the water in the air diffuser chamber will be displaced by the air provided by the air source. The vertical region of bubbles within the standing water reduces the density of the water in that region, such that splash is virtually eliminated.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for applying a lateral restraining force to a diffuser or an inlet mixer of a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) jet pump restrainer assembly is described.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a lateral restraining force to a diffuser or an inlet mixer of a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) jet pump restrainer assembly, to pull the diffuser or inlet mixer toward a centerline of a riser pipe. The lateral restraining force may be applied to just a diffuser, or just an inlet mixer, or both. Clamps are attached to the diffuser or inlet mixer, and alternatively to the riser pipe, and draw bolts are connected to the clamps to provide the necessary restraining force. The lateral restraining force either mitigates damage and repair to a conventional jet pump restrainer assembly, or alternatively is used in lieu of a jet pump restrainer assembly.

TL;DR: The results from the tests and compares them with other tests carried out in the United States and tests that have been carried out on other types of diffusers are discussed in this paper.
Abstract: Many activated sludge plants (ASP) use fine bubble diffused air as their source of oxygen. Blowers are attached to air pipework, which distributes air to a network of diffusers installed on the floor of the ASP tank. Modern diffusers are made from a rubber membrane which flexes to allow fine bubbles of air to pass through holes in the diffusers which then pass into the mixed liquors in the tank. The diffusers come as circular discs, tubes and more recently mats or panels. Yorkshire Water is in the process of building new ASP at some of their biggest sewage treatment works to meet new final effluent consent standards associated with the freshwater fisheries directive (FFD). These new works will treat sewage from a combined population of over two million people in the Yorkshire area. Black & Veatch is involved in some of the first works to have a new type of fine bubble diffuser installed in the ASP basins. These diffusers resemble a mat or panel and are fixed to the floor of the tank as opposed to circular and tubular diffusers which as fixed above the floor. Oxygen transfer testing has been carried out to show the efficiency of these aeration systems, which may offer significant savings in operating costs to water operators. This paper examines the results from the tests and compares them with other tests carried out in the United States and tests that have been carried out on other types of diffusers. The paper will discuss the results of the oxygen transfer tests and present capital and net present costs (NPC) for various diffuser installations.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas turbine which suppresses increase in the amount of cooling air used to control a clearance because the high temperature components of the gas turbine are cooled by air extracted from a compressor and air supplied by a blower separately placed whereas power is needed to supply the air extracted from the compressor and the cooling air supplied by the blower and the increase in the number of components to be cooled increases the consumption of the cooling air, resulting in the reduced performance of the gas turbine.SOLUTION: In the gas turbine which comprises a turbine casing cooling path provided to the casing of the gas turbine and an exhaust diffuser cooling path provided to the exhaust diffuser, there is formed at least one path through which a coolant flows from the turbine casing cooling path into the exhaust diffuser cooling path.
