TL;DR: Analyses indicate a considerable amount of organic enrichment in the jet-produced particles relative to the bulk seawater composition when sodium laurate, an organic surfactant, is present in the seawater.
Abstract: Sea spray particles ejected as a result of bubbles bursting from artificial seawater containing salt and organic matter in a stainless steel tank were sampled for size distribution, morphology, and cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) activity. Bubbles were generated either by aeration through a diffuser or by water jet impingement on the seawater surface. Three objectives were addressed in this study. First, CCN activities of NaCl and two types of artificial sea salt containing only inorganic components were measured to establish a baseline for further measurements of mixed organic-inorganic particles. Second, the effect of varying bubble residence time in the bulk seawater solution on particle size and CCN activity was investigated and was found to be insignificant for the organic compounds studied. Finally, CCN activities of particles produced from jet impingement were compared with those produced from diffuser aeration. Analyses indicate a considerable amount of organic enrichment in the jet-produced particles relative to the bulk seawater composition when sodium laurate, an organic surfactant, is present in the seawater. In this case, the production of a thick foam layer during impingement may explain the difference in activation and supports hypotheses that particle production from the two methods of generating bubbles is not equal. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive review of diffuser augmented horizontal axis tidal current turbines is presented in detail, including the components, relative advantages, limitations and design parameters of the turbines.
Abstract: The renewal energy technologies are increasingly popular to ensure future energy sustenance and address environmental issues. The tides are enormous and consistent untapped resource of renewable energy. The growing interest in exploring tidal energy has compelling reasons such as security and diversity of supply, intermittent but predictable and limited social and environmental impacts. The tidal energy industry is undergoing an increasing shift towards diffuser augmented turbines. The reason is the higher power output of diffuser augmented turbines compared to conventional open turbines. The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive review of diffuser augmented horizontal axis tidal current turbines. The components, relative advantages, limitations and design parameters of diffuser augmented horizontal axis tidal current turbines are presented in detail. CFD simulation of NACA 0016 airfoil is carried out to explore its potential for designing a diffuser. The core issues associated with diffuser augmented horizontal axis tidal current turbines are also discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of different geometric and operating parameters have been tested for each device (including pressure rise and sulfate content to mimic real wastewater treatment plant conditions) and results showed that the bioreactor pressure has a strong influence on the mass transfer characteristics of the three oxygenation devices.
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Dissolved oxygen is a key parameter in the biological removal of gaseous H2S since sulfide-oxidizing bacteria convertH2Sintoelementalsulfurinsteadofsulfateunderlimitingdissolvedoxygenconcentrations.Elementalsulfurisinsoluble in water and accumulates in the packing material in biotrickling filters, increasing the pressure drop and operating costs. A set ofmasstransfertestswasperformedinaversatilepilotplanttosupplythenecessaryoxygenforthebiologicaloxidationofH2S. The plant can be operated with three different commercial gas‐liquid contactor devices: a venturi ejector, a jet-venturi and a diffuser. The effects of different geometric and operating parameters have been tested for each device (including pressure rise and sulfate content to mimic real wastewater treatment plant conditions). RESULTS: Results showed that the bioreactor pressure has a strong influence on the mass transfer characteristics of the three oxygenation devices. In addition, the ionic strength of the solution has a low influence on the mass transfer process. The SOTE values obtained for the diffuser, jet-venturi and venturi ejector were 8.7%, 7.2% and 6.0%, respectively (pure water experiments), while SAE values were in the range 6.3‐5.5 × 10 −2 ,4 .1‐4.8 × 10 −1 and 3.1‐3.7 × 10 −1 kg O2 kW −1 h −1 , respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The jet-venturi offers the best oxygen transfer with lower power consumption compared with the diffuser and venturi ejector. The practical implementation of the most efficient aeration technology is possible from both technical and economical perspectives. c 2012 Society of Chemical Industry Supporting information may be found in the online version of this article.

TL;DR: In this article, a cyclone-type venturi jet aeration nozzle is described in the utility model, which comprises a collapsible tube, trunnion, a suction opening, a diffuser tube, a flow deflector and the like.
Abstract: The utility model relates to a cyclone-type Venturi jet aeration nozzle which comprises a collapsible tube, a trunnion, a suction opening, a diffuser tube, a flow deflector and the like. According to processing condition, 3-10 flow deflectors are welded on the inner side of the diffuser tube and are uniformly distributed along the inner side. Pressure water (containing activated sludge and sewage) from an injection pump flows through the trunnion at a high speed and then negative pressure is formed. Air is absorbed into high speed steam through the suction opening and is violently mixed with sewage and activated sludge in the trunnion to form a solid (activated sludge)-gas (air)-liquid (sewage) three-phase homogeneous emulsion jet water course. Under the guidance of the flow deflector in the diffuser tube, the three-phase homogeneous emulsion jet water course is sprayed out in a spiral diffusion way. After being sprayed out from the diffuser tube, the homogeneous emulsion whirlingly flows forward in a turbulent water body in the aeration tank to continue the mass transfer effect so as to prolong retention period of tiny bubbles in sewage. Therefore, continuous high-efficiency aeration effect is realized. The cyclone-type Venturi jet aeration nozzle provided by the utility model is prepared from stainless steel, has a simple structure, and is convenient to use.

TL;DR: In this article, a diffuser adapted to dissipate air from seed conveyed in a stream of air at a planter to an opener arm and seed boot is presented. But the diffuser is not suitable for indoor gardening.
Abstract: A diffuser adapted to dissipate air from seed conveyed in a stream of air at a planter to an opener arm and seed boot. The diffuser provides a housing that pivotally supports a counter-weighted valve piece and a resilient valve piece. Admitted seeds are resiliently deflected between the valve pieces. Repeated deflections between the dual valve pieces and simultaneous venting of the conveying air through an associated fulcrum screen and relief ports at the housing dissipate the conveying air. Spent seed momentarily collects on a surface inside the housing and gravitationally falls from the housing and through a lower lying seed boot at a relatively uniform, singulated rate without scatter and damage to the seed.
