TL;DR: The efficiency of the aeration system in a full-scale activated sludge basin with 3 separately controlled aeration zones was improved for the low loading period in summer, and aeration costs were reduced by 15% for the most efficient combination.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have disclosed ways to edge and end-seal the membrane strip diffusers to the diffuser bodies and how to close the gap between the membrane and diffuser body.
Abstract: Membrane strip diffusers are disclosed, useful for example in aerating wastewater in activated sludge plants. These diffusers have membranes, diffuser bodies and gas conduits elongated in the same general direction. Such conduits may be attached to or formed integrally with the diffuser bodies. Gas chambers form beneath the membranes when they inflate, and these are separate from but communicate with the gas conduits, e.g., through passageways distributed along the lengths of the membrane supports. Preferably, the passageway flow cross-sections are small, thus tending toward uniform distribution of gas along the membrane's length. Ways to edge- and end-seal the membranes to the diffuser bodies are also disclosed.

TL;DR: In this article, a portion of a diffuser flow passageway has been removed from the diffuser inlet to the leading edge of the ribs to provide improved flow angle alignment.
Abstract: The improved diffuser includes pinching a portion of a diffuser flow passageway that has ribs therein extending partially across the diffuser passageway and that have their leading edges located away from the inlet of the diffuser passageway. The diffuser passageway is pinched from the diffuser inlet to the leading edge of the ribs to provide improved flow angle alignment and the leading edges of the ribs been moved away from the impeller to avoid buffeting and noise as the compressed gas leaves the impeller and enters the annular diffuser passageway.

TL;DR: An air diffuser is a box-like diffuser chamber with sheet metal side walls, that are provided with a series of laterally spaced outlet orifices as mentioned in this paper, which is highly efficient for diffusion of low temperature air and can be of essentially all-metal construction.
Abstract: An air diffuser apparatus has a box-like air diffuser chamber with sheet metal side walls, that are provided with a series of laterally spaced outlet orifices. Each orifice is formed by cutting out wing portions of the sheet metal on each side of a center line of the orifice and bending the wing portions outwardly to a position inclining toward this center line. The wing portions define an air flow passage tapering in an outward direction. The chamber has a base connected to a lower edge of the side walls that includes a layer of heat insulation material. An upper structure closes the upper end of the chamber and has an inlet opening for introducing pressurized low temperature air into the chamber. This arrangement is highly efficient for diffusion of low temperature air and can be of essentially all-metal construction.
