TL;DR: In this article, the authors run an artefactual field experiment in rural India which tests whether farmers can create efficient networks in a repeated link formation game, and whether group categorization results in homophily and loss of network efficiency.
Abstract: We run an artefactual field experiment in rural India which tests whether farmers can create efficient networks in a repeated link formation game, and whether group categorization results in homophily and loss of network efficiency. We find that the efficiency of the networks formed in the experiment is significantly lower than the efficiency which could be achieved under selfish, rational play. Many individual decisions are consistent with selfish rationality and with a concern for overall welfare, but the tendency to link with the ‘most popular’ farmer in the network causes large efficiency losses. When information about group membership is disclosed, social networks become more homophilous, but not significantly less efficient. Networks play an important role in the diffusion of innovations in developing countries. If they are inefficiently structured, there is scope for development policies that support diffusion.

TL;DR: A theoretical model, based on research in the diffusion of innovations, that emphasizes the importance of medical culture, practice, and social institutions can improve project and implementation design and management, and facilitate the adoption of medical computer applications.
Abstract: Increasing concern has been expressed over the slow rate of diffusion of medical computer applications. Although the history of medical computing provides examples of applications that have been slow to develop, it also contains applications that rapidly became part of standard medical practice. The differences in development and adoption of different medical computer applications can be partly explained in terms of a theoretical model, based on research in the diffusion of innovations, that emphasizes the importance of medical culture, practice, and social institutions. Attention to these factors can improve project and implementation design and management, and facilitate the adoption of medical computer applications.

TL;DR: The Visitor Services Project of the National Park Service (VSP) as discussed by the authors is a case study of the adoption and diffusion of innovations in a sustained recreation research program, and the VSP was explicitly guided by Rogers's (1983) theory of adoption.
Abstract: This paper examines under what conditions sustained recreation research programs will succeed. The Visitor Services Project of the National Park Service is treated as a case study. The VSP began in 1982 with a single pilot study conducted by the Cooperative Park Studies Unit (CPSU) at the University ofldaho. By 1992, 52 studies had been conducted for 45 parks. First the VSP is described, including its history, scope, methods, results, and status. The development of the VSP was explicitly guided by Rogers's (1983) theory of adoption and diffusion of innovations. The theory is briefly outlined, and the VSP is evaluated in light of the insights that emerge from understanding the processes of adoption and diffusion. Finally, the implications of the theory and case study for other sustained recreation research programs and recreation practitioners are discussed. Sustaining a coherent research program can (1) encourage managers to use research results, (2) reduce. overall costs, (3) improve research methods, (4) allow for comparison between sites, and (5) provide timely visitor data for decision making. Hence, the case study may have utility for a variety of agencies and professionals who design, conduct, and Use the results of recreation research.

TL;DR: Askarany et al. as mentioned in this paper provided evidence for the adoption and diffusion of activity-based costing (ABC) in the Sultanate of Oman (as a developing country) and examined the significance of the effect of characteristics of innovation on the adoption of ABC (as both a practice and a process).
Abstract: This study provides evidence for the adoption and diffusion of activity-based costing (ABC) in the Sultanate of Oman (as a developing country) and examines the significance of the effect of characteristics of innovation on the adoption and diffusion of ABC (as both a practice and a process). It further explains some of the variations in the ABC’s adoption rates in the literature. The findings show that the adoption and diffusion of ABC in Oman is not very popular. The results provide no conclusive evidence to support the significance of innovation characteristics on the adoption and diffusion of ABC in developing countries, such as Oman. While the diffusion of innovation theory suggests that innovation characteristics could have a significant influence on the adoption and diffusion of innovations, current study suggests that the diffusion of certain innovations (such as ABC in our study) in a particular environment and situation (such as developing countries-case of Oman in our study) could follow other ideologies (e.g., fad fashion philosophy or institutional theory) rather than the diffusion of innovation theory.
