Abstract: This paper examines the potential impacts of genetic use restriction technologies (GURTs) on various developing countries. The impact on any given country will depend on its existing biotechnology capability, the potential for developing biotechnology capability and the country’s suitability for growing GURT target crops (i.e., nonhybridized species). For a large group of countries, the outcome will depend on how GURTs influence the diffusion of innovations from developed to developing countries. This is necessarily an empirical question, as GURTs will affect both the general rate of innovation and the rate of diffusion between countries. A case study of hybrid maize indicates that hybridization as a use restriction technology has slowed the overall diffusion rate of innovations to many developing countries. When GURTs are introduced it will be important to increase public research spending and to restrict other plant-related intellectual property rights so that the diffusion of innovations can continue.

Abstract: A lot of agent-based models were built to study diffusion of innovations. In most of these models, beliefs of individuals about the innovation were not represented at all, or in an highly simplified way. In this paper, we argue that representing beliefs could help to tackle problematics identified for diffusion of innovations, like misunderstanding of information, which can lead to diffusion failure, or diffusion of linked inventions. We propose a formalization of beliefs and messages as associative networks. This representation allows to study the social representations of innovations and to validate diffusion models against real data. It could also make models usable to analyze diffusion prior to product launch. Our approach is illustrated by a simulation of iPod TM diffusion.

Abstract: The purpose of the work is to scientifically substantiate the influence of digital methods on the nature of the formation and change in the cost structure, propose methods for assessing the effect of accelerating and expanding the diffusion of innovations due to the use of modern digital communications. The features of digital technologies of diffusion of innovations as an economic resource and a specific product of industrial activity are highlighted. The paper presents sociological research results on the sources of information on innovations and the need for a specialized digital system for the spread of knowledge and technology transfer in the agricultural sphere. The detailed proposals for the creation of the “Agroexperience” information portal, designed to organize a knowledge circulation system in the agro-industrial complex are fundamentally new. The conclusion about the qualitatively new impact of digitalization on the theoretical views and practice of the modern economy is made.

Abstract: Customer-facing information systems have received very little research attention, especially in the context of healthcare. As hospitals begin to provide healthcare consumers with online patient portals to view and manage personal health records and diagnostic results, little is known about whether or not the ‘dominant paradigm’ (Fichman 2004) of diffusion of innovations theory is sufficient for explaining the characteristics of early adopters. We suggest that a more nuanced understanding of early adoption of patient portals is needed because early adopters are not only the largest hospitals with substantial resources and capabilities residing within competitive environments. Specifically, we suggest that patient-portals are impacted by market characteristics and require Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) systems to be adopted first. We develop a non-linear, two-stage, econometric model with sample selection correction that controls for EMR adoption and estimates the impact of diffusion of innovation and market characteristics on the early adoption of patient portals by U.S. hospitals.

Abstract: Electronic participation (e-Participation) is important because it can provide, to citizens, participation in the formulation of public policy, which is because it helps to reduce distances and therefore time required for participation. Because e-Participation initiatives can be analyzed as innovations, the theory of Diffusion of innovations can formally analyze this phenomenon. This paper presents the validation of an instrument to analyze the attitudes of citizens towards e-Participation services. The validation results show high levels of reliability, providing a consistent instrument to analyze such attitudes.
