TL;DR: A hybrid board/video game that leverages the advantages of both physical and digital media that has the potential to enhance natural and enjoyable recreational interaction between friends.
Abstract: In order to develop technology that promotes social interaction rather than isolation, we are exploring the space between board games and video games We created a hybrid game that leverages the advantages of both physical and digital media A custom sensor interface promotes physical interaction around the shared public display while the un-oriented tabletop display encourages players to focus on each other rather than on the interface to the game The ensuing social interactions define the course that the game takes, while the computer enhances the gaming experience by completing the menial tasks and providing dynamic, exciting environments Our hybrid board/video game has the potential to enhance natural and enjoyable recreational interaction between friends

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a system and methods for providing media playback in a networked environment, such as a wireless web enabled device, which is able to render the control interface in a web browser, and in this manner control playback of digital media via the networked media playback device or networked multimedia playback system.
Abstract: Described herein are systems and methods for providing media playback in a networked environment. In one embodiment, a networked media playback device is configured to provide a web server for delivering data indicative of a browser-renderable control interface for the networked media playback device, or for a related networked media playback system. In overview, the user of a networked device, such as a wireless web enabled device, is able to render the control interface in a web browser, and in this manner control playback of digital media via the networked media playback device or networked media playback system.

TL;DR: It is argued that podcasts can help instructors change face-to-face instruction from traditional didactic lectures to more constructivist learning practices.
Abstract: A podcast is any digital media file, or series of files, distributed over the Internet for playback on portable media players and personal computers. This study explored the attitudes, perceptions, and use of podcasting as reported by instructors and students at a large American Midwestern university. The results of two online surveys were examined, focusing specifically on items related to teaching and learning. Findings suggest that students use podcast materials largely for reviewing concepts and issues raised in lectures that they have previously attended. While instructors and students agree that podcasts help students learn, students are less sure about whether podcasts improve instructors' teaching. The authors argue that podcasts can help instructors change face-to-face instruction from traditional didactic lectures to more constructivist learning practices.

TL;DR: Analysis, experimental results, and independent studies that demonstrate quality benefits of WMV-9 over a variety of codecs, including optimized implementations of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264/AVC are presented.
Abstract: Microsoft ® Windows Media 9 Series is a set of technologies that enables rich digital media experiences across many types of networks and devices. These technologies are widely used in the industry for media delivery over the internet and other media, and are also applied to broadcast, high definition DVDs, and digital projection in theaters. At the core of these technologies is a state-of-the-art video codec called Windows Media Video 9 (WMV-9), which provides highly competitive video quality for reasonable computational complexity. WMV-9 is currently under standardization by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the spec is at the CD (Committee Draft) stage. This paper includes a brief introduction to Windows Media technologies and their applications, with a focus on the compression algorithms used in WMV-9. We present analysis, experimental results, and independent studies that demonstrate quality benefits of WMV-9 over a variety of codecs, including optimized implementations of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264/AVC. We also discuss the complexity advantages of WMV-9 over H.264/AVC.
