TL;DR: The essence of the method presented is to use linear programming in certain situations where constraints limit search techniques to find a fruitful direction in which to continue the search.
Abstract: Mathematical problems in which some explicitly stated function of ma:~y independent variables is to be minimized or maximized andin which the variables may also be subjected to various explicitly stated constraints (usually called the general problem ot' mathematical programming), continue to be difficult te solve in practice. The prescott work is an extension of previous ideas on unconstrained optimization by \"search\" techniques, to the more difficult problem of constrained optimization. The essence of the method herei~ presented is to use linear programming in certain situations where constraints limit search techniques to find a fruitful direction in which to continue the search. Computational experience , while limited, has indicated that the procedure is reasonably efhcier~t.

TL;DR: In this paper, a linear least-squares approximation is used in conjunction with the genetic search procedure to minimize the computational effort of composite sandwich components of satellites, where failure modes induced by local instabilities associated with such composite sandwich constructions are used as design constraints in the optimization problem.
Abstract: Advanced design concepts and rigorous optimization methods are essential to address the conflicting and stringent design requirements of aerospace structures. The focus here is on the use of discrete optimization methods, specifically the genetic search method, for tailoring composite sandwich components of satellites. Failure modes induced by local instabilities associated with such composite sandwich constructions have been developed and used as design constraints in the optimization problem. A linear least-squares approximation is used in conjunction with the genetic search procedure to minimize the computational effort. Results of this study indicate that, for large-scale design optimization problems, the number of function evaluations required by this implementation is high and that more robust and alternate approximation concepts are necessary to minimize the overall computational effort.

TL;DR: A new algorithm designed specifically to tackle stochastic discrete resource allocation problems is proposed, which combines with the Nested Partitions method, the Ordinal Optimization techniques, and an efficient simulation control technique.
Abstract: Stochastic discrete resource allocation problems are difficult to solve. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm designed specifically to tackle them. The algorithm combines with the Nested Partitions method, the Ordinal Optimization techniques, and an efficient simulation control technique. The resulting hybrid algorithm retains the global perspective of the Nested Partitions method and the fast convergence properties of the Ordinal Optimization. Numerical results demonstrate that the hybrid algorithm can be effectively used for many large-scale stochastic discrete optimization problems.
