TL;DR: The feasibility of maintaining a single-mode optical fiber interferometer in quadrature is demonstrated using a servo driven piezoelectrically stretched coiled fiber with stress voltage coefficient of ~27pi rad/V.
Abstract: The feasibility of maintaining a single-mode optical fiber interferometer in quadrature is demonstrated using a servo driven piezoelectrically stretched coiled fiber. The controller has a range of ~10(-5)-1000 rad with a stress voltage coefficient of ~27pi rad/V.

TL;DR: A theoretical model indicates that this mode of operation can be explained by the internal birefringence of the laser cavity combined with a nonlinear transmission element and the gain response of the fiber amplifier.
Abstract: An erbium-doped fiber laser that produces a train of intense noiselike pulses with a broadband spectrum and a short coherence length is reported. The noiselike behavior was observed in the amplitude as well as in the phase of the pulses. The maximum spectral width obtained was 44 nm. The high intensity and the short coherence length of the light were maintained even after propagation through a long dispersive fiber. A theoretical model indicates that this mode of operation can be explained by the internal birefringence of the laser cavity combined with a nonlinear transmission element and the gain response of the fiber amplifier.

TL;DR: For powers exceeding a sharp threshold in the vicinity of several hundred watts the beam quality from some narrow bandwidth fiber amplifiers is severely degraded, and it is shown that this can be caused by transverse thermal gradients induced by the amplification process.

TL;DR: In this article, the theory and application of fiber loop reflectors, fabricated by forming a fiber loop between the output ports of a directional coupler, is described, and the reflectivity of the loop is shown to depend upon the coupling characteristics of the coupler and on the degree of birefringence in the fiber loop.
Abstract: The theory and application of fiber loop reflectors, fabricated by forming a fiber loop between the output ports of a directional coupler, is described. The reflectivity of the loop is shown to depend upon the coupling characteristics of the coupler and on the degree of birefringence in the fiber loop. Measured loop reflectivities, in terms of wavelength response, coupling ratio, and loop birefringence are shown to agree very well with theory. Two applications of the fiber reflector are briefly discussed; an all fiber laser and a duplex optical communications link using a single light source. >

TL;DR: A fiber-optical switch that is activated at tiny energies corresponding to a few hundred optical photons per pulse is demonstrated by simultaneously confining both photons and a small laser-cooled ensemble of atoms inside the microscopic hollow core of a single-mode photonic-crystal fiber.
Abstract: We demonstrate a fiber-optical switch that is activated at tiny energies corresponding to a few hundred optical photons per pulse. This is achieved by simultaneously confining both photons and a small laser-cooled ensemble of atoms inside the microscopic hollow core of a single-mode photonic-crystal fiber and using quantum optical techniques for generating slow light propagation and large nonlinear interaction between light beams.
