TL;DR: The character image layout method as mentioned in this paper includes a reference line-selecting process for selecting a desired one of n lines of character string images as a reference and an other line layout process for determining the range of the length of a character string image on the reference line as a layout range to lay out each character image on each of other lines, within the layout range.
Abstract: A character image layout method lays out n lines (2≦n≦m) out of m lines of character string images (m≧2) through any of uniform layout processing, left end alignment processing, right end alignment processing, center alignment processing, scale-up processing and scale-down processing. The character image layout method includes a reference line-selecting process for selecting a desired one of n lines of character string images as a reference line and an other line layout process for determining the range of the length of a character string image on the reference line as a layout range to lay out each character string image on each of other lines, within the layout range. In the other line layout process, when the length of a character string image on any of the n lines to be laid out is longer than that of the layout range, the any of the n lines to be laid out is reduced in size through the scale-down processing and laid out in the layout range.

TL;DR: This paper presents an unsupervised method where layout style information is explicitly used in both training and recognition phases, and is robust with both balanced and unbalanced style cluster sizes, zone over-segmentation, zone length variation, and variation in tree representations of the same layout style.
Abstract: Logical entity recognition in heterogeneous collections of document page images remains a challenging problem since the performance of traditional supervised methods degrades dramatically in case of many distinct layout styles. In this paper we present an unsupervised method where layout style information is explicitly used in both training and recognition phases. We represent the layout style, local features, and logical labels of physical regions of a document compactly by an ordered labeled X-Y tree. Style dissimilarity of two document pages is represented by the distance between their respective trees. During the training phase, document pages with true logical labels in training set are classified into distinct layout styles by unsupervised clustering. During the recognition phase, the layout style and logical entities of an input document are recognized simultaneously by matching the input tree to the trees in closest- matched layout style cluster of training set. Experimental results show that our algorithm is robust with both balanced and unbalanced style cluster sizes, zone over-segmentation, zone length variation, and variation in tree representations of the same layout style.

TL;DR: In this paper, an e-document can be searched and found by capturing an image of the printed document, instead of typing in a file name or searching through multiple directories, the user simply takes a picture of the document with a camera and the system uses the document image to locate the edocument.
Abstract: In an embodiment of the invention, an electronic document (e-document) can be searched and found by capturing an image of the printed document. Instead of typing in a file name or searching through multiple directories, the user simply takes a picture of the document with a camera and the system uses the document image to locate the e-document. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, an image of a printed document can be useful for remote document sharing. In various embodiments of the invention, sharing an image of a printed document can be used to email a high quality paper document, send a high quality fax, or open a document to a page containing an annotation. Through co-design of the feature extraction and search algorithm in the system, the image feature detection robustness and search speed are improved at the same time.
