And the results show that the spectral robustness of 70-fs pulses of 800-nm Ti-sapphire laser radiation transmitted through 2- and 3-µm pitch holey fibers can be enhanced by a factor of about 1.5 by increasing the air-filling fraction of the fiber cladding from 16 up to 65%.

Abstract: A method of obtaining oceanographic and meteorological data from high frequency radar spectral information comprising the steps of transmitting a plurality of signals to a remote geographic location, recording signals backscattered from the said location, generating a family of Doppler clutter spectra from the recorded backscattered signal and analysing the Doppler clutter spectra in terms of a model or models to generate oceanographic and meteorological data estimates. The Doppler spectra are categorised according to Suitability for Detailed Analysis (SDA). The SDA takes account of the clutter-to-noise ratio in the spectrum , the amplitudes of the Bragg-lines, multimode propagation, spectral broadening and other spectral parameters. Spectra with a low SDA are inappropriate for extracting directional wave spectrum estimates of reasonable accuracy but are useful for obtaining wind direction estimates. Spectra with a high SDA are capable of being inverted to provide good quality estimates of the extended directional wave spectrum.

Abstract: The bandwidth of the output spectrum of blood flow meters may prove of value in estimating flow parameters such as the degree of turbulence. It is therefore important to determine the various factors which affect this bandwidth. It is shown that scatterers moving in the near field of the sound beam generated by a single transducer ultrasound Doppler system produce a spectrum whose breadth is primarily determined by the range of angles over which backscattered ultrasound is received by the transducer. An empirical method of calculating the bandwidth of the output spectrum is described, and the results are compared with direct Doppler measurements. Since the spectrum broadening depends on the angle between the target path and the ultrasound beam, it is suggested that the phenomenon may be usable to provide an independent measure of this angle.

Abstract: We present the results of high resolution core level photoelectron spectroscopy employed to investigate the electronic structure of clean and oxygen covered Ir(111) surface. Ir 4f7/2 core level spectra are shown to be very sensitive to the local atomic environment. For the clean surface we detected two distinct components shifted by 550meV, originated by surface and bulk atoms. The larger Gaussian width of the bulk component is explained as due to experimentally unresolved subsurface components. In order to determine the relevance of the phonon contribution we examined the thermal behaviour of the core level lineshape using the Hedin-Rosengren theory. From the phonon- induced spectral broadening we found the Debye temperature of bulk and surface atoms to be 298 and 181K, respectively, which confirms the softening of the vibrational modes at the surface. Oxygen adsorption leads to the appearance of new surface core level components at 200meV and +230meV, which are interpreted as due to first-layer Ir atoms differently coordinated with oxygen. The coverage dependence of these components demonstrates that the oxygen saturation corresponds to 0.38ML, in good agreement with recent density functional theory calculations.

Abstract: Ultrasound systems can be used to investigate blood flow by use of the Doppler effect. The flow information may be displayed as either a real-time sonogram or a two-dimensional colour image. Estimates of maximum velocity using commercial systems are in error by typically 10-100 per cent; this is associated with the inability of the single-beam Doppler method to measure the true direction of flow, and with geometric spectral broadening. Vector Doppler systems acquire Doppler information along two beam directions and are able to measure accurately the velocity and direction of motion within the scan plane. The small beam width of modern Doppler systems means that the condition of uniform insonation, required for estimation of mean velocity from mean frequency shift, is not valid except for the very smallest vessels. Other quantities related to the velocity may also be estimated, such as the volumetric flow and wall shear stress. Flow visualization using colour flow imaging suffers from dependence of the displayed colour on the direction of blood motion. The vector Doppler technique may be extended to colour flow to give improved visualization of flow, in which there is no angle dependence within the scan plane.
