Abstract: Thermoelastic instability in automotive drum brake systems is investigated using a finite layer model with one-sided frictional heating. With realistic material properties of automotive brakes, the stability behavior of the one-sided heating mode is similar to that of the antisymmetric mode of two-sided heating but the critical speed of the former is higher than that of the latter. The effects of the friction coefficient and brake material properties on the critical speeds are examined and the most influential properties are found to be the coefficient of friction and the thermal expansion coefficient of drum materials. Vehicle tests were performed to observe the critical speeds of the drum brake systems with aluminum drum materials. Direct comparisons are made between the calculation and measurement for the critical speed and hot spot spacing. Good agreement is achieved when the critical speeds are calculated using the temperature-dependent friction material properties and the reduced coefficient of friction to account for the effect of intermittent contact.

Abstract: An implantable artificial sphincter system provides long-term adjustment via transcutaneous energy transfer (TET), minimizing invasive adjustment through adding or removing fluid via a syringe. An infuser device provides bi-directional fluid transfer via a flexible conduit to a sphincter band, such as a gastric band, by a combination of thermodynamic actuation and a piezo-electrically disengaged drum brake assembly that thereby achieves a desirable small volume device. A propellant within a propellant cavity surrounds a metal bellows accumulator biased at body temperature to either expand or collapse the bellows accumulator with the opposite direction of movement effected by a thermal element that heats in combination with a negatively-biased propellant or cools in combination with a positively-biased propellant. A drum brake assembly locks the metal bellows accumulator in place between adjustments by thermodynamic actuation by activating piezo-electric stack actuators that disengage calipers from a brake drum attached to the bellows accumulator.

Abstract: The nature of the contact and pressure at the interface between the friction material pad and the disc rotor of a ‘spot’-type disc brake affects the performance of a brake in terms of torque, temperature distributions and wear. Interface contact and pressure distributions have been predicted for a particular design of floating caliper passenger car disc brake, using three-dimensional finite element analysis under static and dynamic brake actuation conditions.The influence of friction material compressibility, pad backplate thickness, coefficient of friction, caliper flexure, disc stiffness and actuating piston contact with the piston bore on the interface pressure distribution is examined. The effect upon brake performance is discussed in terms of ‘centre of pressure’ and corresponding braking torque, and in terms of observed effects such as temperature and wear distribution.
