TL;DR: In this paper, an effective braking system suitable for three-phase induction motor drives is discussed, where a single capacitor is connected across two of the motor terminals allowing single-phase self-excitation.
Abstract: An effective braking system suitable for three-phase induction motor drives is discussed. Braking is achieved in four stages using an electronic switching circuit. Initially, a single capacitor is connected across two of the motor terminals allowing single-phase self-excitation. Following a certain speed drop, a second capacitor is added across the same terminals to sustain self-excitation and reduce the speed further. In the third stage magnetic braking is achieved by short circuiting the third terminal. Finally, the motor is brought to a standstill by dc injection. A method of determining minimum capacitor requirements is presented for both single-phase and symmetrical application. Experimental results are included, demonstrating the validity of theoretical results regarding capacitor requirements, and indicating the effectiveness of the proposed braking scheme.

TL;DR: In this article, a control circuit for a three phase induction motor includes a voltage controller having a silicon controlled rectifier in each of the first, second and third supply line connected to the motor.
Abstract: A control circuit for a three phase induction motor includes a voltage controller having a silicon controlled rectifier in each of a first, second and third supply line connected to the motor. The control circuit further includes a first, second and third phase control means for controlling the firing angles of the respective silicon controlled rectifiers, a circuit for providing a positive ramp signal, and a circuit for providing a constant level signal. A starter circuit includes a "run" push button and a "brake" push button. The depressing of the "run" push button connects a three phase power supply to the supply lines of the voltage controller and causes the positive ramp signal to be applied to the first, second and third control means to control the firing angles of the silicon controlled rectifiers to provide a soft start for the motor. The subsequent depressing of the "brake" push button renders the second and third phase control means inoperable thus terminating the running of the motor and applies the constant level signal in place of the positive ramp signal to the first phase control means to control the firing angle of the silicon controlled rectifier in the first supply line to thereby provide a D.C. current for braking the cruising motor.

TL;DR: The consist power monitor as discussed by the authors is a microprocessor based device which communicates with other locomotive consist power monitors, either through the MU cable or over a wireless link, to display consist status to the engineer.
Abstract: A consist power monitor provides information to the engineer of a multiple unit consist on the ability of each locomotive to provide traction power and dynamic braking. The consist power monitor is a microprocessor based device which communicates with other locomotive consist power monitors, either through the MU cable or over a wireless link, to display consist status to the engineer. Where the communication is through the MU cable, the communications link is provided by a high frequency carrier superimposed on an existing MU cable wire. No modification is required to the MU cable allowing for easy retrofit of existing locomotives. The alternative wireless communication is accomplished by means of a low power, spread spectrum data link now being incorporated into new locomotives. Information exchanged among the consist power monitors pertains to loading and dynamic brake conditions of the locomotives in the consist. Locomotive consist information is presented continuously.
