TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the speech rhythm of a user of a palatal lift protheses by analyzing the way she signals somelinguistic boundaries when reading a short story, and find that despite her neuromotor impairment, the subject is able touse pauses to signal a prosodic hierarchy.
Abstract: Dysarthria is associated with a deficit in phonemic planning orparalysis of specific speech articulators, besides a frequentvelopharyngeal impairment and expected prosodic alterations. Themain goal of this work is to describe the speech rhythm of a userof a palatal lift protheses by analyzing the way she signals somelinguistic boundaries when reading a short story. Pause durationswere measured and pauses were classified into six syntacticcategories. The correlation coefficient between categories anddurations is 62%, signaling that not all variance can be solelyexplained by syntax, but also by considering prosody as the interplaybetween linguistic knowledge and constraints of a biomechanicalsystem. Despite her neuromotor impairment, the subject is able touse pauses to signal a prosodic hierarchy.

TL;DR: Analysis of the speech disorder in a man and his children revealed disturbances in the coordination of jaws, larynx and tongue with a poor control of pitch and volume and impaired intelligibility, which could be due to a familial malformation in the pons or cerebellum.
Abstract: . A syndrome of dysarthria, clumsiness and abnormal ocular movements are described in a man and his 3 children. His father, who died when our patient was born, also had the same speech abnormality. Our patient also had multiple painful lipomas suggesting a probable diagnosis of adipositas dolorosa Dercum. Although he looked muscular he complained of muscular weakness and fatigue. Oral treatment with a local anesthetic, mexiletin, inhibited the pain in the lipomas. Analysis of the speech disorder in our patient and his children revealed disturbances in the coordination of jaws, larynx and tongue with a poor control of pitch and volume and impaired intelligibility. The poor fine coordination of hands, clumsiness when walking, dysarthria and disturbance of eye-movements could be due to a familial malformation in the pons or cerebellum. Computer tomography and X-ray of head were normal but the grooves on the surface of the cerebellum were more marked than usual.

TL;DR: This article reviewed previous dysarthria literature and selected 46 perceptual characteristics that could be examined at various subsystems of speech production and provided explanations and rationale for the rating method for each of the perceptual characteristics.
Abstract: Perceptual judgement method is frequently used in evaluating dysarthric speech. Although most of speech pathologists and researchers focus on the 38 perceptual features provided by Darley, Aronson & Brown(1969) during evaluation, there are additional characteristics that may be useful to describe dysarthria in literature. We reviewed previous dysarthria literature and selected 46 perceptual characteristics that could be examined at various subsystems of speech production. We also provided explanations and rationale for the rating method for each of the perceptual characteristics. This attempt might aid to offer a basic ground for developing a diagnostic tool of dysarthria.
