TL;DR: In this article , the authors argue that biopunk films deliver dystopian warnings about the misuse of genetic engineering, while attempting to project a voice for posthuman becomings, using films such as Gattaca, Code 46, Antiviral, and The Girl with All the Gifts.
Abstract: Abstract With the contemporary proliferation of genetic engineering and the resulting ability to directly change the makeup of human life, narratives about genetic alteration have become a staple of the popular cultural imagination. While not the only science fictional approach to such developments, biopunk is one of the dominant forms such narratives have taken. Using films such as Gattaca, Code 46, Antiviral, and The Girl with All the Gifts, this chapter situates biopunk in the larger context of postmodern and posthuman science fiction. It argues that biopunk films deliver dystopian warnings about the misuse of genetic engineering, while attempting to project a voice for posthuman becomings.
