TL;DR: In this article, the authors described key issues related to the seismic design of the bridge and verified the desired post-earthquake level of service using stress, deformation and ductility performance criteria.
Abstract: The scope of seismic work included establishment of design criteria, extensive analysis and validation of the design. Analysis and design included both Functional Evaluation Earthquake (FEE) and Safety Evaluation Earthquake (SEE) criteria. The analysis was performed for the upper-level configuration and the future lower-level configuration, as well as half-scour and no-scour conditions, using detailed three-dimensional time history models that included geometric and material non-linearity. The desired post earthquake level of service was verified using stress, deformation and ductility performance criteria. This paper describes key issues related to the seismic design of the bridge.

TL;DR: In this article, two reinforced concrete buildings (one with special moment resisting frames and the other with structural walls) were designed using a time-history inelastic behavior approach, and measured drifts from components detailed under 1990s North American code requirements were compared with calculated building drifts.
Abstract: Two hypothetical reinforced concrete buildings (one with special moment resisting frames and the other with structural walls) were designed. Using a time-history inelastic behavior approach, both buildings were analyzed. Drifts were determined for these structures when subjected to severe earthquakes similar to those expected in North America. In addition, drifts associated with an analysis based on ground motions measured for the 1985 Mexico City earthquake were also determined. Measured drifts from components detailed under 1990s North American code requirements are compared with calculated building drifts. These comparisons indicate that 1990s code requirements provide significantly more capacity than calculated to be needed for the structures and components considered. Finally, minimum drift requirements for components to be used in ductile frame buildings and in shear wall buildings are suggested.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the influence of several design parameters such as proportioning and selection of members, magnitude of design base shear, and configuration of lateral force-resisting system on the seismic response arising from strong ground motions of steel frames constructed with momentresisting connections.
Abstract: The seismic response arising from strong ground motions of steel frames constructed with moment‐resisting connections causes significant inelastic deformations in the members and connections. The inelastic behavior is dependent upon several design parameters, such as proportioning and selection of members, magnitude of design base shear, and configuration of lateral force‐resisting system. The influence of these parameters was investigated by performing inelastic time‐history analyses of six variations of a structural frame for a typical five‐story building. The direct design procedure adopted in the 1988 edition of the Uniform Building Code was used in the seismic design of the steel frames that were providing all of the lateral stability. The computed inelastic behavior for each frame design is compared with the expected behavior as envisioned by the code. The results reveal the calculated story drifts are larger than the acceptable limits for the structural frames investigated in this study when subjec...
